To-day the Church is debt free. It is well organized, and, considering the many other activities of community life, it is making an honest and suc- cessful effort to bring comfort and in- spiration to the lives of the people at home and abroad. The women of the church have been particularly active in keeping the Church building clean, attractive, and comfortable, The minds of the mem- __ special services, beri have been stimulated, and gen- : . , erous contributions have been made to ords for the Sound System,' giving the skaters a better class of | in fact to watch the various funds of the Church. The outstanding feature of the year's work (by both men and wom- en) has been the development of better life among the young people. ' Altogether about one hundred young folk have felt the influence of this inspiring effort. Rev. Mr, Smyth has proved himself a capable and kindly leader, and has enlisted the assistance of a corps of workers well fitted for the task, This group' includes Mrs, Peterson, Mrs. Cornish, Miss Spooner, Miss Currie, Miss McMillan; and Mr. Cornish and Mr. Kerr, Among the older men Mr. Gemmell "has given distinguished service as leader of the forum. It is a bit sur- prising that more members have not enjoyed and profited by the leadership of Mr. Gemmell and Rev. Mr, Smyth in the Men's Class, In financial affairs success has crowned the work of the Stewards, "headed by Mr. Smallman, with Mr. J. E. Jackson, treasurer, and Mr, A. | Brock as envelope steward. Starting the year with a considerable deficit, the budget was balanced; and there is every evidence that the work of the Church will go forward with good financial support, in spite of the loss by death of some of the older mem- bers who were substantial givers. A resolution of thanks was tendered to Rev. Mr. Smyth for his excellent leadership in the work of the Church. At a meeting "of the Official Board the following appointments were made: Recording Steward--S. Farmer. Treasurer--J. E. Jackson. Envelope 'Stewards--A. W. Brock and Margaret Brock, M. & M. and General Fund. Auditors for 1938--G. R. Davey and L, H. Corner. Additions to Board of Elders--R. G. Gemmell, F. E. Reesor, R. J. Har- per, L. A. Koch, Geo. A. McMillan. Choir Committee--R. G. Gemmell, F. E. Reesor, Ronald Peel. i TWO EXCELLENT CHURCH " EVENTS The Men's Class of the Church was responsible for two in- spiring events--The Banquet and the led by Rev. R. J. Mutchmor. The banquet was a thoroughly en- joyable affair. The ladies of the Church catered in excellent style. Messrs. V. P. Stouffer, B, Snelgrove and Geo. Stone, gave a delightful string trio." Mr. Letcher led the sing-|. sing. Mr. R. J. Harper presided very happily. The speaker, Rev. Geo. Dickson, spoke in humorous and serious vein of the need' of living on the cheery side of the street, in spite of all the dis- turbances and difficulty that there is in the world. His address will long be remembered as an inspiration to good living. On Sunday, Rev.-R. J. Mutchmor, spoke of Evangelism and Social Ser- vice work. His talk to the Men's Class in the afternoon was particular- ly illuminating. It showed the very practical aplication of Christian prin- oo a GOSPEL HALL The first of a series of Sunday ciples to real life. evening messages on: "THE WONDER OF THE BIBLE" Illustrated with Charts "Bring your Bible and notebook COME AND WELCOME United | Letter from F lorida St. Petersburg, Fla., Jan. 16. Mr. 8. Farmer, Editor, Port Perry Star, Dear Mr. Farmer,--Our trip south in December again proved to be very pleasant. We were favoured with fine weather and dry pavement, and on arrival the temperature was about 70. We found everything in good cou- dition at our home here and just two days before Christmas I cut three bejutiful roses from our garden. ince our arrival, to the present, we have had sunshine nearly all the time with a temperature varying from 60 to 80. We hear a great deal about the California climate, and its scenery of mountains and valleys, and they are really nice to behold, but as I remem- ber my experience there one season, and the comments made by several members of our bowling club, who spent last winter in California, I am thoroughly convinced it does not com- pare favorably with the Florida climate, The City of 'St. Petersburg seems very prosperous. The business places of the city have been very much changed and improved, and hundreds of entirely new buildings have been erected. You will quite understand Mr. Editor, the pleasure afforded us in having our Port Perry friends in the city, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brock and cently started their homeward trip, and they too, spoke in terms of praise of the Sunshjne City. While they were in the city, they with Mr, and Mrs. W. H. Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Jury, of Bowmanville, and ourselves, spent a most 'pleasant day on the Gulf of Mexico Beach, one of St. Peterburg's beauty spots. We have been saddened during the past couple of weeks to know of the passing of so many of our people in Port Perry, who were held in high valued service to the community. And we take this opportunity to extend to the bereaved friends our sincere sym- pathy. Just last Friday, another of the former citizens of Port Perry, the person of Dr. Duncan Campbell, died very sudenly. Only a few days ago I apparently in good health, and he was much interested as we talked of the Port Perry people. . When making enquiry about his old time friend Mr. W. L. Parrish, he was delighted when I assured him that Mr. Parrish was down town attending business every day. Wishing you a happy and prosper- ous year. Yours truly, "8S. Jeffrey. A COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS At a recent meeting of the Port Perry: Council the following appoint- ments were made. High School Trustee -- Mr. A. M. Lawrence. Board of Health--Messrs. William Graham and Neil Sweetman. Weed Inspector--Mr, L. Leahy. Taxes--Current and Arrears--Mr. G. F. Manning. Auditor-- Mr, H. G. Hutcheson. A donation of $10.00 was made to the Salvation Army. The Relief committee will carry on the relief work through the Clerk's office. The office of Relief Officer is discontinued. DIR aay THE LOCAL W. M. 8.
