The subject of the meeting was "Peace" and this theme was car- ried out throughout the program, The Scripture reading was led by Mrs. Baird with responses by five ladies. The Temperance Secretary, Mrs. S. Farmer, gave a report, as did also Mrs. Sandy, the Peace Secretary. It was decided to form a Baby Band in connection with the Society and Mrs. C.-C: Jeffrey was appointed Supt, with Mrs. Charsley as assistant. Then followed a very fine report of the re- cent Sectional meeting of the Presby- terial held in Oshawa, given by Mrs. S. Ploughman, with some further re- marks by Mrs. Colbear. Following this Mrs. J. Ploughman, the devotional leader, took charge and after devo- tions, a dialogue was given by Mrs. Coolbear and Mrs. S. Ploughman, on the promotion of peace, showing how peace may be promoted from the at- titude of individuals to one another, up through the church, community and state. 3 a Miss G. Stovin gave a very fine summary of the Study Book of the 'year--"Facing a New World", gather- ing up in concise form the important facts of each chapter. This brought to a close one of the finest meetings / the year. MOTHER AND DAUGHTER BANQUET On Friday evening of last week the C.G.I.T. of the United Church held a "Mother and Daughter" Banquet. Mrs. C. P. Peterson presided most happily. The whole affair was most delightful- ly/carried out. Mary is well know by those who have been patients in the Port Perry Hospital, where her cheerful smile and tireless service made the weary hours in 4 hospital bed go much faster. The party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M, McCormick, who so graciously took the part of host and hostess. The first part of the even- ing was spent playing cards or danc- ing to the music being rendered by Dr. Rennie, C. Hooey, D. O'Flarity. A very appetising lunch was served along with tea or coffee. After lunch a letter of appreciation was read to Mary by Mrs: G. Christie, then Mrs. McCormick handed Mary nu lovely gift in the form of a dresser set, pen and pencil, and a nice box of chocolates from Mrs. Aleta MacFar- lane. More music was played, and Mr. G. Christie moved a vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. McCormick for the use of their home and the help given to make the evening a success. The party closed with everyone bid- ing Mary good-bye and a safe and pleasant journey. BROCK THEATRE WHITBY (All shows Daylight Saving Time.) Anniversary Services Sunday, May 16th, was Anniversary Day for the United Church in Port} Perry. It was fittingly celebrated with special music by the choir, and addresses by Rev. Archer. Wallace, M.A, D.D,, Toronto, Dr. Wallace is a genial character, and his kindliness and hopefulness, permeate all his expressions, both written and spoken. His .sermons were inspiring and wholesome, and were greatly appreciated, both at Port Perry and at Prince Albert, "A Tale of Two Cities" The illustrated lecture on Monday evening was one of those rare oppor- tunities for enjoyment and enlighten- ment. First, Dr. Wallace is to be con- gratulated upon collecting the finest set of colored slides it has ever been our pleasure to see. The two cities-- London and New York-- were depicted in character- istic fashion. The history of thc one, and modern progress of the other were everywhere in evidence, It is difficult to say which city presented the greater charm, The Londoner (of which the editor is one) saw many beloved and noble pictures, The great figures of history are auto- matically recalled as the Tower, St.. Paul's, Westminster, the British Museum, Cheapside, Charing Cross, and the coster section of the East End, appeared and faded from view. The deep rooted home loving sense can only be secured in a city like London, that has seen triumph, joy and sorrow for thousands of years. The City of. Progress--Upwards In striking contrast were the pic- tures of New York. They were beauti- ful in many respects; but they seemed to be a wonderful mass production, exhibiting an eagerness and a spirit of adventure, so indicative of our con- ception of American life, What courage was shown by those who could dare to erect such buildings as the Empire State Building (1850 ft. high and housing - 80,000 persons); Radio City; Woolworths, the Waldorf- Astoria, and' the luxurious apartment houses ou Riverside Drive. Those who were privileged to see these splendid views, and to come un- der the charm of Dr, Wallace's racy and intimate descriptions, will always remember that evening with pleasure, ST. W. Crozier by fellow employees of Miss Bessie Crozier and staff of Simpson's Ar- cadian Court. Miss Bessie's friends on the staff were very anxious to convey to her their sincere sympathy in her bereave- ment and the conventional custom of expressing sympathy through the medium of flowers at the funeral in this instance being discouraged, they asked if there was any institution as charity in which Mrs. Crozier had worked for and taken an interest in supporting to which they could make a contribution which would have been pleasing to her? This brought the Library into the picture as Mrs, Crozier had been a friend and supporter of it, This sug- 'gestion appealed to the would-be donators and as a result the following Library.
