Recently he passed his examinations for the degree of M.A, with first class honours, at Western University, London, This summer he and Mrs. Smallman go to Nova Scotia, where he, under the authority of the Fisheries Depart- ment, will make further biological studies of the oyster. We congratulate Beverley upon his industry and consequent rapid pro- gress in scholarship. Mr. Alfred Andrus, who is now em- ployed in Exeter, was home for the week end. It is difficult to pay a fitting tribute to the memory of so rarely beautiful a personality as that of Mrs, James 'MacBrien, whose sudden passing has brought poignant sorrow to her many friends in Port Perry and Prince Al- bert. Yet we would like to place in words some little appreciation, how- ever inadequate, of her life and char- acter. This union was blessed with a family of nine children, seven of whom survive. A daughter, Isabel (Mrs. DeLury), wife of the Dominion Astronomer, Ottawa, died some years ago; a son Sir James, win- ner of many military honours, passed away only two months ago. Others members of the family have also won ; distinction, notably Miss Julia Mac- i Brien, an accomplished pianist and $ harpist. : The MacBrien home in Prince Al- bert, with its spreading lawns and spacious garden, is one of the most attractive places'in our locality, and here, during the summer months, members of the family and many guests foregathered. Mrs. MacBrien was a very gracious chatelaine, and to the last was active and keenly inter- : ested in all about her. To the last, 5 also, she was an indefatigable gar- i dener, and was often to be seen going it about among her lovéd flowers and 5 shrubs. Even in old age she was a i strikingly beautiful woman, and look- | ed years younger than she was. Her spirit, like her face, remained youth- ful, though her quiet dignity and sweet screnity seemed to belong rather to the calm and stately Vie- torian age that to these turbulent and hectic Georgian days. The opening and closing lines of ne a very appropriate to the passing of such a strong and gentle spirit: "Strew on her roses, roses, And never a spray of yew; { Her cabined, ample spirit, : It fluttered and failed for breath; To-night it doth inherit The vasty hall of death." Three little girls, the Lunney Sisters, sweetly sang "Jesus Loves Me." After singing of a hymn, program. Mrs. Lunney gave a splen- did reading, "Sweet Water and Bit- ter". Mrs. O. The ladies of the Women's Association catered, and provided a delightful meal, : "Zone Four includes Ontario County, Durham, Muskoka and Georgina, and part of North York, Victoria. Mr. Ramsay, postmaster at Myrtle Station, presided. He first called én Mrs, V. P, Stouffer to play for the| community singing. Then Mr. Dur- kin, accompanied by Mrs. Durkin, sang two much appreciated songs. These were followed by two violin solos by Mr, Stouffer, accompanied by Mrs. Stouffer, as pianiste.- CE Several of those present were called upon to address the gathering, includ- ing Mr. Scott Brandon, Mr. Reeves, Mr, Whitfield, and Mr. Ferris, of Campbellford. The latter gentleman outlined the work that is being done to organize the -postmasters of On- tario. The foundation work of organ- ization is about completed, including a complete set of records. There are 972 offices in the eight Ontario Zones according to Ramsay, and, with less than fifty per cent. membership, > There is a difference made "between Post Offices that sell money orders, and those who do not. Mr. Ramsay was of the opinion that all-post- masters should have the privilege of selling money orders as -the lack of this accommodation causes loss of revenue both to the local postmaster and to the Government. Another re- duction in possible profits arises from the fact that many parcels that should go by mail, are taken by express. A little more effort on the partzof the postmasters could secure this business as the service is good and includes free insurance up to $60.00, small. The chief objectives of the Associa- |2 1.
