The story is that this cactus for some: years back has obstinately refused to bloom. As a cactus when not in. bloom is not by any means beautiful and this one was positively ugly, it was natural that Gardener Smith's patience was about exhausted and last fall he decided to leave it out to freeze, Mrs, Smith, a little more optimistic, suggested sus- pended sentence for another season. Seemingly this had a good effect for this spring it burst into 4 mass of bloom. b-bd A friend suggested that it was too bad to have this rare sight in a cor- ner where but few could see it and asked to be allowed to take it down town and place it in a prominent win- dow where all could enjoy it. Really this was asking Mr, and Mrs. Smith to make a sacrifice. They had bur- dened themselves by nursing it along for years when it'sfas only an eyesore and when at last it bloomed and they had a chance to get some pleasure in return for their labor they were asked to deprive themselves of it and give it to others but with characteristic un- selfishness they assented and it is now in Mr. I.
