Miss Widden, who was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thos. J. Wid- den, spent all her life in Port Perry. Her long association- with her father in the grocery store, brought her in touch with many people who learned to honour and depend upon her for her fair dealing and kindly service in matters of business. Her loyalty to her parents in their declining years brought comfort to them," and was greatly appreciated by the many friends and neighbors who fully understood. how much of person- al sacrifice that devotion meant. That same loyalty showed itself-in practical fashion in Miss Widden's church life. This was particularly noticeable in connection with the Evening Auxiliary of the United Church Woman's Misisonary Society. Here she found many prized friend- ships and a practical outlet for those Christian virtues for which both par- ents and daughter had long been noted. Quict-and unassuming, yet practical and loyal, Miss Widden was a citizen Port Perry could ill afford to lose. ~ The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. J. H. Smyth; and interment was made in Pine Grove Cemetery, Prince Albert. Anniversary Services THE UNITED. CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL OF The Anniversary Services of Port were held morning and evening on Sunday, June 23rd. The speaker was Rev. F. GQ. Joblin, of Scugog Island. 'Special music was given by the Primary department, under "direction of Mrs. Z. M. Jackson, and by the Sunday School scholars, under the direction of Mr. Percy Densham. The church was beautifully deco- rated with flowers, which were after- wards distributed to sick folk in the village. Mr. Joblin's addresses were inspir- ing and helpful. In his evening ad- dress he took for his text -- "I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days"-- Ezekiel 3:16. The great lesson drawn from this text by the speaker was the need for sympathetic understanding of our fellow men, Kindness and sympathy will open many hearts. The hot words of condemnation are left unspoken when" we understand the conidtions which bring people to_un- happiness and misery. We shall have to learn to sit where they sit before we can be truly. sympathetic. Mr. 8. Ploughman, Mr. Mansell Gerrow, and Mr, Joseph Baird, assist. ed in the sérvices. CHURCH SERVICE Joseph Denny Members of Fidelity Lodge, AF. & A.M. attended Divine Service on Sun- day, June 23rd, at St. John's Presby- terian Church, when the Minister, Rev. Robert Simpson, gave an in- spiring discourse, His text was chosen from Heb, 12:25, "See that ye refuse Him that speaketh, for if they escaped not who refused Him" that spake on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him that speaketh from Heaven. Whose voice then shock not the earth, but now He hath promised saying, yet once more I shake not the earth only, but the heavens," Though we cannot speak of peace today, we can still have His peace 'that passeth all understanding. In his younger days the speaker said he had to examine build- ings and if they were not on the level or on the square they had to come down again, Everything in our present day life that we hope to remain must be on the level. That is all right if the founda- tions are right. They can be built up again on the old foundations, but said he, if the foundations be destroyed what can the righteous do.
