BY WALLACE DUEUL Berlin "Correspondent of Daily News, 1934-40, delivéred in Oshawa recently. i Germany's number of airplanes is exaggerated -- Probably 10,000, with capacity for 5000 to 6000 a month. life of Germany that. will appreciably reduce her war strength this year, Most of the Germans are sick of this war. They were sick of it when they s started and never wanted it. There i§ no spontanedus cgjebration. No joy on the part of the people at military display, except on occasions officially proclaimed for that purpose. No cheer, no waving, no flowers, as military equipment passed. the occasion of joy to the Germans, but Mr. Ducub says he saw not a sign of such. "Why did Berliners not rejoice?" he asked. "I never got the answer" he replied. The majority of the Germans are sick at heart. They believe they will win; but they see no value in- victory. The tragedy is that most people in Europe, outside the Finns and Greeks, do not believe in anything. They have no faith cither in democracy or social- jsm or in any other form of. govern- ment. To oppose Nazism would. be to throw themselves on the merey of a victor- ious foe, The bombing of Berlin 'thus far has relatively little physical significance. The moral and psychological effect is terrific. They realize they have been fooled. They were told bombers could not reach Berlin even from West France. Now they know they have come all the way frem England. Mr. Dueul in 'illuminating fashion spoke of the "Death of Nations." On the part of North American Continent there is much scepticism re- garding the facts of life in Europe, Why? (1) People feel that they were fool- ed by propaganda in the lakt war, and now they will not believe when told advisedly of vastly worse atrocities. To all Municipal Councils who have : McNaughton, |: (2) Because of the unabashed denial of the Nazi. Hitler will pro- test against what he condemns as vile ininsinuation; and, a few weeks later proceed to do the very thing he protested against. (3) What is done is so horrible as to be incredible. A systematic whole- sale destruction of a people, not wholly, for they could not deal with the millions of bodies. But they break the spirit, the will to resist. There is the miracle of economy of means. The Gestapo does this, The Nazi's attack the qualities that cduse a peo- ple to cohere as a nation. Depriving them of land, implements and health, hunger and cold cause this latter loss, and by deportation they rend them apart and destroy them as a people without extermination, all sorts and conditions, healthy and sick; forward minded and feeble minded are shipped in box cars or cattle cars in coldest winter no heat, no sanitation, and dumped in the desert, Many of them frozen to the cars and bodies are torn asunder in moving them, Finally decided to lessen this work of removal by waiting for a thaw.
