Hubenig,| - Wooler; | Sunday, Nov. 30, High School Notes Ad Optima .By D. H. Nasmith - On Monday, November 24th, the Literary Society program was pre- sented by the pupils of Grade XII The meeting which was under the chairmanship of the president, Doris MacGregor, was opened with the sing- ing of "0 ,Canadd", followed by the reading of the minutes of the last meeting by the Secretary, The presi dent then gave her words 'of welcome and the program was turned over to the Grade -XII class, Ruth Arnold the prologue, in which she thanked Mr. Breckow, the form teacher of Grade XII, for the time and, effort he put forth to make the presentation a success, The play, "She was only a Farmer's Daughter" was then enacted by the competent cast of characters. It was one of those old-fashioned melodramas which should not be taken too serlously and judging from the reactions of the sympathetic audience, it was not. After the: curtain. had fallen, the president called upon Mrs. George Jackson to give the critic's "report. The criticism was short and to thef point. The general impression given that the presentation had been a suc- cess was greatly appreciated by both the cast and the audience, The meet- ing closed with the singing of the National Anthem. On the morning of Friday, Nov. 28, the singing classes of Grades XI and XII. under the leadership of Mrs. | Switzer, will have the privilege of singing on' the radio. These * two classes are to go to Toronto on that morning and are to make a broadcast at 10.30 E.D.S.T. from CFRB. We feel surg that you will enjoy hearing this exhibition of singing talent from the Port Perry High School, repre- '| sented by these two grades. Next week we will give a detailed announcement concerning "the High School ~~ Commencement °~ Exercises which are to be held in Auditorium of the High School on December 5th. This was the case with Mr. Chipping, called . Mr. Chips by his pupils, who came to an English school in 1870, at the age of twenty- two, a shy man with no understand- ing of boys. ~The boys sensed this weakness and. laughed at him- mak- ing him less sure of himself. . His wife Kathleen, helped him to 'over-1" come this obstacle to a great extent. As years went by, Mr. Chips .grew less shy and more tolerant. The boys |' learned to love-and respect him, Then came the greatest tragedy of his life. His wife died after a few short years of happily married life. / "Chips" was stunned at the time, but his wife's in- fluence caused him to persist until he became a sucessful - school-master. When, during the first Great War, most of his beloved boys left to serve their country he saw, with a deep sence of gratification; many of them receive military honours. Resigning in 1919, on account of illness, he took up his abode at Mrs. Wickett's, across from the scheol, so that he could be near "his boys", whom he was always ready to help in any difficulty. A schoolmaster for over half a century, he died at the age of eighty-five, leaving a sadness in the hearts of all Brookfield. Good-Bye Mr. Chips is a story to be read and reread, a story that is wide- ly discussed and deeply treasured by all. James Hilton has written this story in a very lucid style, It has human appeal *hecause. it relates the story of how a young man won his way to success and happiness by per- sistent effort and 'through the in- fluence of an understanding helpmate, The story is interesting because it gives an insight into the life of early English schoolmasters.
