Thompson The snowy ol is with us again this winter in Southern Ontario. Periodically this bird leaves its home in the far north and spends the. winter In -southern latitudes. We may see it perched in a lone tree in a field, on a telephone pole by the roadside or on some _ isolated 'haystack,--silent, still and watchful, appearing more like a lump of snow than a living crea. ture. The snowy owl is a unique bird fn several ways. Of all the mem- bers of the owl family, it alone is white, or nearly so. True, mauy of those we see are barred with brownish-black, but the old males are immaculate. It fs the most di urnal of all our owls, often seen hunting in broad daylight, and, unlike most owls it haunts the open spaces instead of 'wooded country. It is a sad reflection on human nature that such a beautiful bird should he an object of so much persecution hy thoughtless gun. ners. No sooner are these splendid birds with us than numbers of them are slaughtered and brought to local taxidermists' shops, and town newspapers reproduce illus. trations of so-called sportsmen proudly holding a murdered owl. A Silent Sentinel If the truth were realized, those who so wantonly shoot the snowy owl are destroying one of the farmer's best friends. It is not for nothing that this silent sen- tinel watches the ficld before him, Examination of the stomach con- tents of birds brought into the Royal Ontario Museum have re- vealed the following facts: Destructive mammals Beneficial mammals Unidentified mammals Protected birds Unidentified birds Unprotected birds Fish (known carrion) ........ 65% . . 1009, It will be seen in the foregoing list that well over hall of the food of this owl consists of pests or animals _ for which we hold no brief. This means that, for every Snowy owl shot, a host of rats and mice are left free to do their accustomed damage. And couse- quently unthinking people are de- slroying a very useful bird, wor thy of our best protection. It may be argued that this bird also de- stroys beneficial bird life. True,-- but a glance at the above findings of snowy owls' stomach examin ations shows the percentage of this to be remarkably low. It is well known to all students of Nature that, in the things, birds of prey, such as the snowy owl, have -a very import. ant place to fill in preserving the balance of Nature: Nothing is so essential as a natural check on the unlimited increase of any kind of wild life. The snowy owl,-as is the case With all animals, has a real mission in this regard which man can hardly im- prove upon. Quite apart from the usefulness of this beautiful bird, its presence not -only adds much to the inter- est of a winter walk, but, coming, as it does, in numbers and at perl- odie intervals, its presence re- {_yeals a fascinating story of events and movements in Nature. There are many people who take a gen- uine pleasure in the sight of a snowy owl. And there is no rea- son why such pleasure should be denfed nature-lovers by the mis. ided actions of more ,thought- 188s persons. Nervous Disorders Among Animals Reporting an increase in ner- -vous disorders among animals be- cause of the shortage of proteins, hitherto used in feeds, Dr, L. C. Swan of St. Catharines in a - speech to the Ontario Veterinary Association advocated establish- ment of collecting -zones for the salvaging of - dead animals and fish. . "We must seek new sources of supply and discourage waste of valuable animal proteins," he said. "Tremendous - amounts of fish such as suckers and shad could be taken and rivers to supply nutritional fish meal for livestock. There is also a daily waste of dead ani- mals largély because of inade- quate -collecting facilities. "It is indeed a paradox to know of gelatin, fertilizer and bone- meal shortages and then see far- mers drag out to the bush the cow or horse that has died." Obedience You can believe it or not, but thd story is going around that a' detail of eight enlisted men was assigned to move the post library at Camp Davis, N.C. The men carried 'out the assign- ment, bit left one book, ~ Its title was: "You Can't Take It With You." scheme of" flesh-eating from our inland lakes - NO GAS PROBLEM IN INDIA LC] Motive power for supply vehicle, somewhere in India, just naturally lies down, while the driver goes into public building. ii are spipped with rubber tires, but require no gas or oil. The glands pour out ad- renalin. Some classic experiments made years ago by Dr. Walter B. Cannon (Harvard) have shown how essential adrenalin is in the emotional life of all higher ani- mals. It stimulates the heart so that ft can work harder. Without it there is no fight In man or beast. . Dr. George W. Stavraky -(Unf- versity of Western Ontario) has applied this knowledge for the benefit of the Royal Canadian Afr Force. He conducted research to discover the effects of a deficlency of oxygen at altitudes of more than 10,000 feet. He determined the exact amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide needed for the best action of adienal glands. He found that unless a man's blood contains certain amounts of both oxygen and carbon dioxide the ad- renals do not perform their func- tion efficiently. Hence the man can't fight. --0-- SULFA FOR SICK TREES After a five-year test, F. A. Bartlett, a tree expert, announces that the bleeding canker discase ot shade trees can be successfully treated by injections of one of the sulfanamides. Ailing trees treated by the method and proper- ly fed showed an average annual increase of twig growth of more three Inches over similar trees neither treated nor fed. The new method of treatment was (n- itiated at- Rhode Island State Col- lege several years ago when it way discovered that trees in sev- eral Eastern States were dying of an unknown fungus. After isola- tion, the disease proved to be bleeding canker, The compound, a "sulfa" derivative, was applied through injections. A total of 6, 011 injections was. 'made on 822 frees. Of these, he added, more than 1,200 are in . operation on fighting fronts, --mostly Hurricane fighters.
