In most cases it is not difficult to separate the individual sceds from the group. Sugar-heet seed present a special problem. The seed cluster is a hard, tight ball, difficult to handle because it is smaller than a pea fn size. Plant breeders bave ate tempted unsuccessfully to develop a strain of heets which would pro- duce single-cell seeds. Then came Professor Roy Balner of the Dg" partment of Agricultural Engineer. ing of the University of California with a novel idea. He rigged up a device In which a grindstone thrusts the seed against a shearing bar. . Under the pressure thus created the cluster splits into single-unit seeds, 'which can be planted at regular intervals in a row. Sprouts are thinned with a long-handled hoe or a machine. One of these tools 1s an adaptation of the re' cently developed cotton chopper, which consists essentially of ree volving knives. : Sugar-beet growers of tho United States saved more than three mil. Jion man-hours of labor in 1943 by adopting Bainer's method. It 1s estimated that the sheared seed as it Is called, reduces hand labor by at least ten hours an acre. Still greater savings are probable when planting techniques are perfected. The eventual saviyg in labor, on a normal acreage of beets, may ap- proach 20,000,000 man-hours a year, READY TRA. Raising 30,000 = Turkeys A Year Many farmers say that turkeys are hard to raise, but if they |" .could consult Mrs, Agnes H, Hose, of Shagroy Turkey Farm, Lakeville, Connecticut, they might get some useful lessons. In ordi- nary times Mrs. Hose raises 30,- "000 birds a year on her 855-acre farm, but owing to shortage of labor and of feed, she now only raises about half that number, She seldom loses a turkey. Mrs. Hose began in a small way ten years ago with an incu- bator in the basement of her home, relates The St. Thomas Times-Journal, Today she ships birds to every State in the Union and to American tioops overseas for Thanksgiving and Christnjds, She has seven families living on the farm and they all work for her, They are on the job with the turkeys from half-past-five in the morning and stay with them all day. One man devotes his entire time to preparing and dis- tributing the feed; another does all the killing, and in this case it is not the axe that is employed but an. electrocution chamber, _At the age of three months the poults are driven to the ranges where the birds are divided into sectors of 'equal numbers with so many people responsible for the birds in their particular sector and no others, One reason why tur- keys are hard to raise is that Bhar, they, have Seats hy i ey like, to roost in the brane' CANADIAN SOLDIERS WATCH FOR HUNS FPP WP Canadian anti-tank gunners are shown in Italy on the alert for word and sight of German armored vehicles. Infantry were about to advance along the road on the right toward German positions on the first hill in the background. But this time the explosives were fired by the * Germans, as they publicly abandoned hope of holding their Dnieper River line. It would be -difficult to find a more fitting symbol of the progress of the war on the Eastern European front, The Russians themselves first -- destroyed the Dnieper dam fa their costly retreat across the Ukraine. The necessity for that act was a bitter blow, not merely because they were inordinately proud of the structure, but be- cause the defénces of the Ukraine had not proved as strong as they had supposed. It is now come monly agreed that although no real quislings were found any. where in Russia, Nazi propaganda did at the beginning make some headway among is Ukrainians, The original destruction of the Dnieper dam meant relinquish. ing the greatest single monument of the Soviet's new industrializa- tion program.
