THE SPEECH PREPARED BUT : .NEVER MADE trustee for - - - - If 1 am gplected I shall do the best I can for the welfare of boys and girls in the school section and exercise my duties as a trustee of the funds of the community. There are, however, some things which need to be understood between the electors and myself. I shall not ask any man or woman for a vote and I will not have any cars to take to the voting place, those of you who are too lazy to walk, EAL, According to the traditions of elec- tioneering, I should tell you how greatly honored I would.be by your confidence. "1 do not see it that way. The obligation is all on my side. As I see my duty as a citizen I should serve the community in any capacity for which the people think I am hest fitted, but you are not doing me a favour if you take up a large part of my leisure for public business. jng with a book to a meeting of the school hoard or a game of bridge to an evening's wrangle about parents' complaints and school finances or school sanitation, ete. So why iii the world should I ask you to vote for me or pay-for ad- vertisements in | the newspaper? 'Should I be pleased at the thought of being called away from dinner to have a citizen report that his Willie has not received a fair chance or that Jane has been strapped in school? "It comes to this: Here is a job which has to be done by somebody. Person. ally, and quite candidly, I shall be de- lighted if you' choose somebody else. I feel I am doing my duty by offering to serve, and the rest is in your hands, . And remember you are not doing me a favour by voting for me; I am doing 'you a favour by being willing to take on this chore." : Myrtle Station The annual Christmas tree and school entertainment was presented to a well filled hall on Wednesday even- ing of last week.
