We have acknowledged that we need the Church in our community life; we need Christ in our personal life. 'Now this we must admit, that one of the greatest hindrances to the pro- gress of the Christian life is the "misuse" of Christianity, and in par- ticular, the rivalry between religious badies., Christ's intention was to transfigure the old, broken-down Church into a new, united, living one. torn by divisions among us. It was just that problem which was facing our Lord on the occasion under consideration in this column to-day (St, John 4:1-42). A Samari- tan woman asked Jesus where was the proper place to worship--realizing, of course, the division that existed between the Samaritans and the Jews, The gist of Jesus' answer is that it is not the Church to which we go, but the spirit in which we go that counts, "The time is coming when you will be worshipping the Father neither on this mountain nor at Jerusalem" (St. John 4:21). Once the true nature of religion is realized, all sectarian ri- valries will be forgotten; once God is revealed to be the universal Father, (and that is what Christ intended to reveal), the limitations of place are done away, It is'not so much the place of wor- ship which is of account, but its object and its spirit, "The time is coming, has already come, when the real worshippers will worship the Father APPLICATION TO LIFE Rev. E. G. Bruton And yet, to-day, we still seem to bef in spirit and in reality" (St. John 4% 23). God is the object of our worship, and the worship of Him will show itself "in the sphere of the Spirit", in man's inner life. worship God merely as an abstract object; but God is a real Person, whom we can all know. We are reminded of St. Paul's account of the ascription on the Athenian altar, "To the un- i known God", But God is a spiritual |; being, and mere outward form of wor- ship becomes but a mockery if it is not accompanied by a worship in the in- ward sanctuary of the heart, The true Christian religion tran- scends all limits of race or language or sect. We will not be able to reach the true Christian spirit until we forget the rivalry among us. We not alll: worship in the same Church, but we must all strive for the inner spirit of the Gospel. Only then will we find that "living water" which Christ has to offer. Unlike the water from the well, which at best only satisfies the So many of us = | [| : i |} Sunday, July 29th-- Thursday, July 26-- Lawrence's Drug Store News (You Can Save with Safety at Your Rexall Store) LIFETIME PENS STANDARD PENS PENCILS, $4.00 and $4.75 / ®t SHEAFFER FOUNTAIN PENS A shipment of Sheaffer pens has just arrived.
