U. S. TAKES OVER The American flag that flew over the Capitol in Washington" on the day of Pearl Harbor last week flew over Tokyo, says the New York Times. It was the flag that was flown over Rome July 4, 1944, and over Berlin July 20, 1945. It had been selected by President Roose- velt as the symbol of America's triumph over her cnemies. With the dramatic ceremony of its rais- ing over the burned-out ruins of this last Axig capital its mission was fulfilled, The event was the highlight of the formal occupation of Tokyo Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander for the Allies, and his men. ---- Koala bears are nocturnal ani mals, and spend the daytime doz- ing or sleeping. Feel that it's unfair to have only about two pounds of meat a week? Take a look at what five key European countries have to got by on: FRANCE: a thin slicelof meat a week, equal to one-tenth of a pound. Meat In restaurants only on Sundays and legal holidays. Meat consumption in Paris down from 117,000 tons to 5000 tons. Starvation bringing disease in Its wake. Children especially suffer- ing; infant mortality rate up 6&0 per cent. BELGIUM: One meat meal dur- ing the week. Nine-tenths of Bel gium's chickens have disappear- ed. There is no fodder for cattle and all slaughtering has been stop- ped until the herds can somehow be built up. Belgians have to rely on what meat they can buy abroad. HOLLAND: most meals built around sugar beets. Horsemeat, when it can be obtained, is $20 a pound. Mercy convoys from Bri- tain doing their best to provide Dutch children with soup. GRERCE! there is absolutely no fresh meat for rations, All the pigs have disappeared and practically all the dairy cows. One and a half million people are living in caves, scarcely keeping themselves alive. One million people have malaria. YUGOSLAVIA: livestock popula- tion wiped out. A shipload of sheep from abroad had to be unloaded by the crew; the Yugoslav men wera too weak from starvation to work. People who are strong enough are bringing small quantities of grain in on thelr backs from hundreds of miles away. There simply isn't any food. : Churchill Wielded Too Much Power? One reason given for the defeat of Winston Churchill is that the former Prime Minister had ac- quired too much personal power through his leadership in the war, comments the Windsor Star. It is a trait of the Inglish people that they dislike seeing anyone ap: proach the position of a dictator. Although Mr. Churchill may nefth- er have wished to be nor was a dictator, there is no doubt about * the great power he wielded, a In war the people followed his leadership, but once the crisis against Germany had ended, the people decided ft was time to end auch power being in the hands of any individual, even Mr. Chur- chill's. There were so many factors In the recent election in Britain, it is idlo to single out any special one. But, it is always Interesting to re- view some of the dpinions. Hitler A 'Piker' With Girl-Friend Arthur Kanneberg, chief buyer of Hitler's personal necessities trom 1932 to 1946, sald the Fueh- rer liked to play Santa Claus to his bodyguard and household ser- vants but was a piker in his gifts to his girlfriend, Eva Braun. Kanneberg and his wite," who was Hitler's housekeeper, are be- ing questioned In an internment camp by United States Intelligence officers, Kanneberg sald that Hitler liked to poke around in the kitchen and help prepare meals for his lavish parties and that he doted on brew- {ng his own tea from native plants, "1 did all of Hitler's buying his many thousands of Christmas parcels as well as the household needs," Kanneberg sald, "and I know he never gave his sweet. heart, Bva Braun, more than a simple jewel" WHAT SCIENCE IS DOING . New Engine British engineers and scientists have been first in severel inven- tions which have marked , new epochs in human progress, and a new British engine is about to come on the market which will practically render the present-day internal combustion engine obso- let and bring about another engi- neering revolution, states the St. Thomas Times-Journal. This is a gasoline-turbine motor, which has hitherto been called "an inventor's "dream." The inventor is Benjamin Shore, a Yorkshireman, who, dur- ing the war was cngaged in the production of torpedoes. The Shore rotary internal combustion engine, according to all manner of experts who have seen it put to test, will give cheaper and faster transport, cutting the cost of fuel by atleast one-third. It is purely rotary, like the steam turbine, and develops a pressure of up to 800 pounds per square, compared with 100 pounds in the average automobile. It can be applied to motive power besides gasoline such as crude oil, steam or electricity. The new engine, one-fourth the size ol present en- gines, and one-fourth the weight, will give at least four times the power at about two-thirds the con- sumption of fuel, It can be adapt- ed to anything from an automo- bile to an ocean liner or an air liner. Mr. Shore has designed an automobile engine 13 1-2 inches in diameter and 8 1-2 wide, which will give nearly twice the power of an ordinary engine. U.S. Farmer Grows Pre-Salted Celery A Wisconsin farmer named Nick Engel announced last week . that it would no longer -be neces- sary to put salt on 'celery, He claimed he had succeeded after goven years' work in growing pre- salted celery. The process includ- ed mixing 1,000 pounds of salt with the soil while preparing it for planting. Scientists 'were won- dering about the possibility of growing salted peanuts, : Jap Swordsmiths Make Farm Tools The Japanese asserted they were almost literally beating thelr swords Into plowshares, A Tokyo broadcast to Fast Asia, recorded by the Federal Communications Commission, said 'Japanese sword- smiths had turned to the produc- tion of farm implements and .al- ready were making sickles and spades, Killed In Action The United Kingdom alone had approximately the same number of killed dn action as the United States in all theatres of war. The: total comes to some 250,000 dead for. each country, says the Wind- sor Star, When the British Empire dead, including civilians, are counted, it brings the British total to nearly 540,000, s Hore's to relieve MONTHLY FEMALE MISERY Lydia E. Darkened streets are part of the austerity program the British peo- ple have been told they must ex- pect to continue in greater or less - degree for perhaps two years, After the splurge of bright lights in cele- bration of peace, shortages of elec- trical power and gas have made -- in the opinion of the government -- conservation essential. And so, in London, the lights are going out at midnight in various areas, with street lights turned on at dusk and off at midnight. There with only every other street lamp lighted. Other large cities are following the same procedure, amid com- plaints from residents who had hoped for a spcedier return to pre- war conditions, "It looks as though we had bet- ter make up our minds to fit that the days of rejoicing faded with the VJ celebrations; everything, from cigarets to clothes, will soon be in shorter supply than ever and darkness will presently become the only completely unrationed commodity," sald the Manchester Guardian on the conservation pro- gram, Although it is the oldest contl- nent geologically, Australia was the last to be occupied by white ~benetits from German Not Bad -- Hitler's Income $6,000,000 Adolt Hitler received an annual income of $2,640,000, secret Geor- man budget figures disclosed re- cently. In the third year of the war his income rose to nearly $6, 000,000 as a result of his special wartime taxes, It Should Be Is the Encyclopedia Britannica's face red! "The Japanese," it says, "are essentially 1 kindly-hearted; laughter-loving people, taking life easily and not allowing its petty ills unnecessarily to disturb their Japan Must Pay For Ghastly Crime Oné of the most tragic photo-, graphs to come out of the war was found in the pockets of a dead Jap, says The Ottawa Journal. It showed a blindfolded white officer kneeling in front of ranks of grin- ning Japs, in front of him a Jap officer with the sword of decapita- tion poised for the fatal blow. Now it is announced the officer was Lieut. Willlam Newton, V.C. of Australia, beheaded by the Japs in New Guinea in 1943 -- one of the most ghastly crimes of the war, and one for which certainly Japan must pay.
