Lost Half Of Airmen In Battle Of Britain 495 Of 640 Fighting Planes A More Serious Loss During five critical weeks in the 1940 Battle of Britain R.A.F. fighter command lost almost half of its original 1,000 pilots, the British air ministry revealed last . week. From August 24 to September 30, the luftwaffe slugged it out with British airmen, with the su- preme test coming in the two- weck period between August 24 and September 6. The Germans halted thei aerial onslaught just short of victory. Out of the 1,000 pilots, 103 were "killed or missing with an- other 128 seriously wounded. Fighter plane losses of 495 were even more scriotts because Britain had only 640 planes ready for daily operations, with a weekly output from factories and repair shops of 130. During the next three weeks Bri- tish pilot losses were 119 killed or missing and 101 wounded, with plane losses reaching 357. The rate of loss for both men and planes thus fell below the replacement poten- tial. The August loss of 300 pilots killed or wounded had been far in excess of the 250 replacements available and the new men were No mostly untried and unfit for im- . mediate action, The tremendous odds against the R.A.F. are illustrated by the fact that on airfields between Brest and Amsterdam the Germans had some 1,200 long-range bombers, 1,100 fighters and 350 dive bom- bers, Trots Mile In 1:58 After trotting a mile in 1:58 to set a new record for 3-ycar-olds, Titan Hanover, winner of this year's Hambletonian, would be justified in giving the horse laugh to all competitors, but he is now so good that his only competition is a stop watch.--New York Sun. Four years of experiments at the Ontario Agriculture College at Guelph have produced this cheese similar to the imported Rocquefort, The first task was to produce from cow's milk a type of cheese as close as possible to the sheep's milk French product, and secondly to simulate the humidity and tem- perature of the Rocquefort caves. An ordinary loaf of white bread is the sced bed for developing the taste-making mould. When the plant has grown, it and the bread are ground irto a fine powder which is sprinkled into the cheese curds. When the seven-inch cheeses are formed, each one is punched with 40 holes. These are filled with the mould and the green plant sends its tentacles through the rest of the cheese. As well 1s providing connoisseurs with a superior product, this new. use for surplus milk will put many thousands of dollars into the hands of farmers. r *® * * Separate from the university itself which gives only courses in first and second year subjects, two new branches have been added to the Khaki University of Canada--the university extension branch and the vocational training branch., This academic rehabilitation system .en- ables army students to take courses in the United Kingdom up to their repatriation date, British institutions have been -wonderfully co-operative in placing students.
