Iiveryone is welcome, - Ce SP -- ------ ---- OPEN LETTER TO THE STAR Manchester, Dec. 9, 1946 To the Editor of the Star: The letter published in the Port Perry Star of Dec. 6th, by R. J. Deachman, re a farmer's wife looks at strikes. If I under- stand R.J. Deachman, a farmer's wife looks at the 40 hour week as too short a week for the wage worker. Let us as workers and farmers understand this problem more clearly. The reason the worker is demanding a shorter work. day, is the machine age is taking the jobs away from the worker, and therefore the work- er wants his comrades to have a job. This is the reason the work- er is seeking a shorter work day. And in this machine age the em- player can make more profit with new machinery inventions with a shorter work day than he did out of the worker when he was obliged to work 12 hours a day. After all who was the first to make the worker work a shorter work week. It was the boss in the hungry thirties. So now the workers have a little say. For the farmer's wife I hope to see the day when all farmers have a closed shop and then they too will not walk into a store and say, what are you paying of eggs to-day? Yes, I understand both sides. What is a closed shop? It means that if I am a union mem- ber that when the union gets a decent wage and working condi- tion inthe factory, why should the non union man live off these and get something that we have benefits that we have fought for. Ben. D. Roberts. > GREENBANK A large crowd gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs, Robt. Baird at Saintfield, when a shower was given for Miss Iva Baird. The W.M.S. met at the home of Mrs. Mary Blair, on Tuesday afternoon. It was the Christmas meeting and White Gifts were received for shut-ins, C.G.I.T. VESPER SERVICE On Sunday, Dec, 9th, the C.G. |LT. held their annual Christmas Vesper Service.
