Fortunately the blaze was soon ex- tinguished. ' A CHRISTMAS MEDITATION Rev. W. C. Smith What a strange medley is our {modern Christmas spirit: in some re- spects very close to the original intent of the Master, in others far removed from what God would wish, Our Christmas celebration has become a mixture of drunkenness and worship of thanksgiving and frivolity, of Christmas sharing and licentiousness, of €hristlikeness and commercialism, The tirst Christmas proved. to be a world shaking event far more potent than the invention of the atomic bomb. It is the Supreme Revelation of God's love for man and Divine Love has the 'capacity to put to flight the legions of hatred. May we greet the Christ Child with the spirt of reverent anticipation, The world of Jesus' day was waiting for something to happen. The pious remnant of old Israel was aware that according to the Prophetic Books the Messianic event could not be long de- layed. . . For out of thee shall come forth a Governor which shall be shepherd of My people Israel: : May. the Spirit of Wonder possess our hearts this Yuletide season. The amazement in the heart of Mary the Mother was echoed by the surprise of the shepherds. "And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in the manger," The shepherds were simple folk, unlettered likely. This extraordinary experience seemed all the more marvellous to such minds. Logic and education cannot dispel the marvel of this event, for we are in the presence of the miraceulous and trans- cendent. - In this story the Almighty form of a little child, Christ the Lord. The Kings of the Orient when they saw the star rejoiced with exceeding great joy. The angelic host brought good tidings of great joy. If not for longer, for a brief time at least, let the glad news of the first Christmas dis- pel all sense of tragedy, of discourage- ment and let us exult rather in God's gift, for men our brothers are no longer being slain day by day as here- tofore on land and sea and in the air. Truly this ought to be a Christmas of rejoicing for all His mercies and this greatest of all mercies, the gift of Jesus. ) These Kings of the Orient fell down and worshipped Him. Despite fatigue and expense and strange customs and language, they worshipped. - The anticipation of Christmas appears to imbue many modern men, A marked number with an overwhelming thirst for wine, an ungovernable appetite for food, They carouse and eat; they carouse and eat some more. Shall we forget the warship of the New Born King? Shall we forget the emaciated starving of Europe? True worship is the most godlike act in which those modelled after the Divine Image can engage. Shall Christmas be a day of gordid song and wine, or sacred song and worship? : In one sense this is the event, name- ly Jesus coming an event of vaster importance than the end of wars, or the advent of science, or the com- mencement of the industrial age. The stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner. This Saviour is unqualified in His great- ness dispel the reaction of men; for mankind is judged by their attitude toward the Event. Herod was forced by the High Priests and the Phareses in his suspicion and hatred and jeal- ousy of Jesus. His modern counter~ part, Hitler, has arraigned his mighty 'hosts in a vain attempt to overthrow Christianity, .Christian governments, 'decency, order, justice, And of both Herod and Hitler it can be said they are dead. Each of these renegades was doomed to defeat in the beginning by his attitude toward Christ, Examined | 'Mrs, A. Parrinder's class recited, the God breaks in upon the world in the]. 'Myrtle Station The White Gift service on Sunday morning was carried out most success- fully with Mr, S. Saywell in charge. "he gifts overflowed the cradle and were laid on both sides of it; The primary children sang a Christmas number with actions, Three boys of choir singing the chorus after each verse. Mr. Saywell told a Christmas story of the beautiful church with the wonderful set of bells which only rang of their own accord whenever a gift of love was placed on the altar. Christmas service next Sunday at 11 o'clock. The annual meeting of the Woman's Association was held at the home of Mrs. A. Eyers on Wednesday after- noon of last week with a good attend- ance. Such is the attitude. of the trus church- man. In such as these God's servants is combined reverent anticipation, re- spectful wonder, quiet joy and a love- ly worshipful attitude that mounts the heights 0f hounteous thanksgiving. Simeon's joy in the Event is superb surpassing the human realization. Lord now lettest thou thy Servant de- part in peace according to thy word for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Pt De A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE "0 little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee liel Above -thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by." In the early stillness of Christmas morning we may Bee again the truth and beauty of the Bethlemen story. In that stillness we may learn, perhaps for the first time, the true values in life;we may get our first lesson in proportion, Gazing into the depth of the star-spangled sky we learn our lesson: "The silent stars go by". It is always in the face of the big things of life that silence falls; that is why silence and stillness help us to learn "true values", In the depth of the stillness Bethle- hem we come facé to face with our own life; we review our interests, our 'work, our ambitions, our successes and failures, our hopes and fears, We place them in order beside the wonder of that great mystery --« beneath the Silent Stars "the Word was made flesh and. dwelt among us." "The hopes and fears of all the years were met in thee that night." Into such blessed stillness may our Lord in His mercy bring us this Christmastide, The Prince of Peace will once more come into our hearts and throughout the earth Let us thank God for the wonderful gift of His dear LENE nil bre May I take this opportunity to wish my many friends in'and around Port Perry, a blegsed-and joyous Christmas time and renewed endeavour in .the New Year.
