Strikes Don't Fit In With Farming Farmers Must Accept Losses When They Withhold Products Among the more sensational headlines dealing with the latest meat crisis in the Toronto area were the ones hinting at a strike of Ontario beef producers, says the Financial Post. Details were ne- cessarily vague for the very good reason that such a proposal is just about unadulterated nonsense. The strikes don't fit in with farming any more than schemes for the five-day week or the cight-hour day. About the nearest thing of that kind was the refusal of millions of Russian "kulaks" to co-operate with the Soviet authorities 25 years ago. The result was mass starva- tion, with the farmers themselves the chief victims, Nature Asserts Itself The basic difficulty in enforcing a farm strike or five-day week is the refusal of Nature to play ball. Grass and cattle will continue to grow. Calves, lambs and chicks continue .to be born. Cows must be milked and pigs must be fed no matter what th: owner may think about it. If he refuses to cut the hay or milk the cows, then he himself is the first to lose. Like the indiv'iual businessman, the farmer's main interest must be pro- duction, as continuous and econ- omically as possible. Switch May Be Necessary It is ridiculous for the producer of beef cattle or any other farm commodity to think of withholding any marketable product for any length of time. Once it passes the right stage for processing, it begins to deteriorate or it runs up storage charges. If grain-fatter.ed cattle are turned out to grass, they will lose their finish and all the work and feed that went into that finish- ing is largely wasted. Once hogs are brought to the approved 200- odd pound market weight, they must be butchered or they will be docked for excess fat and coarse- ness of flesh. And even the unfor- tunate who has never left the city pavement knows what happens to fruit and vegetables if kept too long. If, as a result of excessive cost or low price, 1 product fails to pro- duce a consistent profit, the far- fer will, if he can, gradually switch to somethin,, else, but he only pyramids his losses by re- fusing to sel' what he has already produced. Fantastic Prices. At Farm Auction Sam Grummett held an auction sale the other day on his farm at vaxwell, Ont., north of Dundalk. A hayloader which Sam bought four years ago for $152 sold for $205, and a 21-year-old mower bought second hand for $5 was sold at the sale for $22. A set of har- rows bought 13 years ago for $3.75 brought $30 at the sale and a culti- vator which cost $26 when purchas- ed 21 years ago was bid uj to $50. Yearling cattle sold for $75 and cows up to $129, Seven sows and 30 young pigs sold for $629.50, - NY WHY HAVE WN SORE 3 a) SPOTS OF SPORTS By FRANK MANN HARRIS Prior to last Saturday's Ken- tucky Derby it had been a con- siderable stretch of time since last we had the pleast - - privilege of hearing Mr. Ted Husing steaming: up the air-waves. But we hadn't been listening to him for, morc than half a minute before we again became conscious of certain sen- timents which, in former days, always used to come over us when- ever we heard that particular microphone-artist in action; said sentiments being, (1) What a master of the situation he is; (2) What a marvellous flow of lang- uage he possesses; and (3)What a severe pain in the neck he gives us. * . - These, of course, are strictly per- sonal entiments, although we know of several who share them. But it's a funny thing how just the very tones of some broadcasters' voices can seem to sect your nérves on edge , ew t Brother Husing rates very close to being tops in his profession, and that it little behooves the likes of us to be critizing one so eminent. And yet, somehow or other, it's impossible for us to listen to him without the feeling that there are two of lim there--the one doing the job, and the other standing off and admiring the super-superlative job the first is doing. « * * However, the actual race sound- ed O.K,, good old Clem McCarthy calling same in his usual workman- like and efficient fashion. And the snooty remarks we have just pass- ed about Mr. Husing are no doubt nothing but a case of sour grapes - because we didn't have a $10 wag- er on the winner, who certainly didn't perform like any eight-to- one shot. In our own defense we m' ght state that we did consider very seriously making a small in- vestment in ASSAULT, being de- terred from so doing by only three small :natters--lack of cash in pocket, lack of credit with books, and inability to decide between ASSAULT and some nine other starters. « * . A constant source of amazement to us is finding out how many things there are we feel absolutely confident of knowing--and then discovering, in a pinch, that we don't know them at all. For in- stance, right after the Kentucky Derby, already referred to, a junior member of the family, who had been languidly listening to Clem McCarthy describe ASSAULT winning by cight lengths, popped up with a seemingly-innocent query. It was, "Say, pop, just how far is a length?" * * . We were immediately beset with one of those severe coughing spells which always seem to attack a per- son--and which come in so very handy--at such junctures, But this one did no good at all. Not cven waiting for our coughing. to subside, and showing an utter lack of sympathy for our sufferings, our whole mob was on the trail, insist- ing on a definite answer to a defin- ite question--Just what distance constitutes 'a length' in horse rac- ing. * * * As soon as we had cooled out somewhat, we had recourse to the record-hooks to try and find our what really does constitute length, And, while no doubt there is a definite ruling some place or other, the nearest we could come to it was in Frank Menke's book where it says--'the average race- horse is something over cight feet in length while running with neck stretched out" We know quite well that ("A Six Bit Critic") -e And so, pending the receipt of more accurate information, that is where we propose to leave the matter. And if, some evening, cur- ly-haired little lodine should look up at you out of her big blue orbs and say, "Daddy, how far is a length" you can tell her, with our compliments, that cight feet is close enough to being correct as to make no matter. And then, gently but firmly push the little darling off to bed or, first thing you know, she'll be asking you if, in timing horse-races, the time is taken from t° exact instant when the barrier is sprung. « * * With regard to that last one, we may say that the time is not taken from the springing of the barrier --Dbut might add that probably ninc out of ten folks who attend horse races think that it is, and what "difference does it. really make, after... all? With which profound thought we will mercifully leave you for another week. Farmers Combine To Do Their Buying We do not advocate that farm ing should be iii the hands of a few big organizations, but there is no reason why adjacent groups of farmers should not combine to do their buying in the same way that co-operative groups combine to do their selling, says the St. Thomas Times -Journal. There are regions in Canada where from 12 to 20 farmers have got together under this system. Instead of each man buying his own equipment, his own seed, fertilizers and other needs, they buy as a unit. By co-operative efforts they get their plowing and other work done at the right seasons, and by buying in quantities they get their supplies cheaper. Thus instead of hundreds ot thousands of farmers working as individual units at high individual cost which prevents them getting what they regard as economical prices for wir produce, they would reduce overhead costs and would not require to ask the un- fortunate city people to pay con: tinually higher prices out of fixed incomes. REJECTS GABLE Ilona Massey, glamorous Hungari- an actress, is believed to be the only girl who won't go out with Clark Gable. In fact, she stated, she turns him down consistently, It's not Mr, Gable's fault. Miss Massey is a girl who lives alone, likes it, and intends to stay that way, seeding, ' Help Come From You One Slice of Bread in Every Loaf Would Feed 2,500,000 Daily United States Government food officials, questioned on what the individual can do to help hungry millicns in Europe and Asia, made a few suggestions for rican citizens, Here they are: 1. If you're a housewife: Never throw a piece of bread or a teaspoonful of fat away. Make sure the garbage consists only of bones, eggshells and the inedible parts of fruits and vege- tal les, Don't overeat. Never over-serve a guest, Don't fry meats, poultry, fish, Bake, boil or stew them. Use fresh fruit for dessert, not pastries. Serve home-made salad dressing, vinegar or lemon juice, not rich salad dressing, Use meat drippings to vegetables, dressings, sauces. Store bread in moisture-preof wrapping in refrigerator. This re- tards mold. Use dry, left-over bread in roast, puddings and stuffings. Jdavor Serve open-faced sandwiches, Or better still, serve a vegetable salad, such as potato or bean, in it place. Give cach person only one <mall slice of bread at a meal. Cut out dry cereals as much as possible. Use potatoes (au ime breakfast dish) and oatmeal. 2 If you're a man: Don't overeat. ~ Eat all they serve you at a (os- ltaurant. Plant a vegetable garden Be a one-man information 1u- reau. Spread the word around that the world food situation 1s critical and will remain that way for at least three months, 3. Everybody: Cut down on waste. The "Des partment of Agriculture cstunates that one slice of bread in overy loaf is wasted. This alone would give 2,500,000 peopls in Furope three-fourths of a pound of bread a day. Remember that people are starv- ing. that many will die unless help cones soon, And: remember that that help cant only cone from you. "1" HOLD EVERYTHING WHY BE SAMSON" BALD 7 HAIR RESTORER Co, "What can we do for you?" One Way to Settle : Palestine Puzzle The brutal way to settle the: whole Palestine argument would be to have the British withdraw from the Holy Land and permit the Jews and Arabs to fight it out b- them- selves, There would be dreadful bloodshed, before one side decided to call it quits, comments the Windsor Star. But, that is not quite the way things are done. In the first place, if the British withdrew, some other nation, pos- sibly Russia, would rush in. Also, there are certain responsi- bilities attached to Palestine and the British have accepted these. Be- cause they have tried to steer a course down the middle, the British are liked by neither®the Jews nor the Arabs. It is like the baseball umpire, who usually is hated by both teams, No matter which way he calls the decisions, fault will be found. There are many it Palestine who believe the United States conld be more helpful. Some think the Americans would pour in money and so keep everyone quiet and contented. That would not be the solution, but the United States could co-operate more in secking to Presser order while a solution is worked out, It's a hot potato. In the meantime hutidreds of thousands of Jewish 1eople in Europe are wondering what to do. Life begins to lose hope, even for a people who have always clung to hope, The cubit, ancient measure of distance, was actually the length of a man's forearm from elbow to end of the middle finger, ip VE ov
