During this week Scouts and Guides celebrate the birthday of Lord Baden- -Powell, the founder of Scouting, who was born on the 22nd of February. On Wednesday February 23rd, the Scouts and Cubs are holding a "Father and Son" of the United Church. Banquet in the Sunday School room On Thursday, February 24th, they are holding an Open night at the School, to which everyone is welcome. Rev. J. Riddell had charge of the Church service and chose for his text Job 18:24-26, A meeting of the Guild was held on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at the home of Mrs. W. Hopkins. Mrs, Gordon Fisher pre- sided and opened the meeting with the singing of hymn 213, "Love De- vine", - Mrs. R. Richardson read the Scripture lesson, Romans 12; Mrs, Fisher led in prayer. A letter of thanks and appreciation was read from Mrs. R. Lunney, Chillawack, B.C, Hymn 236 was then sung, Mrs. Alf, Fisher took charge of the election of officers and the following officers were appointed for the ensuing year: President, Mrs. R. Port Perry with the repeating of the benediction.- In place of their regular meeting the Y.P.S. held an amateur contest in the basement of the church on Friday, Feb. 11, Arthur Richardson occupied the chair and opened the meeting with the singing of hymn 61, "Trust and Obey". The Scripture lesson, Psalm 37, was read by Kenneth Heron, fol- lowed by prayer by Rev. Mr. Riddell. The president then extended a welcome Mr. Walter Kerr pre- sided for the amateur contest. .In the Junior group, 12 and under, the fol- lowing took part--Faye Heron, solo, "Teddy Bears' Picnic"; Murray Slute gave a recitation, "February"; and F. Gardner, sang a solo. - In the senior male group, the first number was a solo by Kenneth Heron, "It's nice to get up in the morning"; Douglas Ashton gave a reading "Life Gets Tedious"; and Hugh Knight sang a solo, "Galway Bay." : In the senior ladies' class there were only two contestants, Doris Mae Her- on played a piano number and Cath- arine Fisher sang a-solo, "Dear Old Donegal." In the group contest, a quartet con- sisting of Grant Parrott, Carol Luke, Murray Beadle and Neil Johnston sang "Onward Christian Soldiers." At the close of the contest Mrs. W. Routley learns 'How to Skate". While the judges--Rev, J, Riddell, Mrs. A. Par- rott and Mrs. Routley retired to make their decisions, Messrs, A, Richardson and Hugh Knight conducted a "Truth and Consequence" contest, The deiision of the judges was as follows: junior group -- First, Faye Heron; 2nd, Frank Gardner; senior male, '1st, Kenneth Heron; 2nd Hugh Knight, senior lady, 1st Catharine Fisher, 2nd Doris Mae Heron. Their was no choice in the group contest. A delicious lunch was served -and a social time enjoyed by all. "The sincere sympathy of the com- munity is extended, to Mrs, Robert Heron and family in the death of a loving husband and father. The late Robert Gardiner Heron passed away at Oshawa General Hospital on Sun- day, Feb, 18. The funeral service. was held at Burn's Church, conducted by Rev. J. Riddell.
