Geo. Nicholson ~The One Hundredth "Anniversary of The Parish of Cartwright was ob- served in St. John's Anglican Church, "Blackstock, on Sunday and Monday, _-. August 27th and 28th. A brief history of the Church and Parish. was pub- lished in this paper recently. To mark the Centenary of the Parish, essential renovation to all Church property was "carried out during the past summer "On Sunday morning, August 27th, " 11 o'clock, the renovatéd -smd re- decorated St. John's Church was' offi- cially re-opened by the Rt. Rev, G. A. Wells, M.A., D.D., C.M.G., V.D,, As- sistant to the Bishop of Toronto, The Church was filled to capacity, and a large number of people femained out- "side throughtout the service. The in- terior of the Church has a simple dignity and an atmosphere of worship and reverence, created as a result of -the devoted labour-of members of the congregation who carried out the re- novation work. Beautiful flowers, tastefully. decorated the building, given by members and friends of thé Parish, and placed, on this particular occasion, in honour of all Rectors, ". Officials and Members of the Parish, who during the past 100 years have been called to Higher service. During the service the beautiful "new Chancel Panelling and Oak Choir .Screen were dedicated by the Bishop "To the Glory of God", as the gift of members and friends of the Parish. Immediately after the Act of Dedica- tion the Doxology was sung. The Confirmation, when sixteen candidates were presented by the Rector, the-Rev. Georoge Nicholson. Those presented for Confirmation were: Shirley Ham- ilton, Ruth Hamilton, Jessie Mec- Arthur, Betty McArthur, Mrs. Bessie Crawford, Mrs. Betty Staniland, Mrs. Frances Fee and Mrs, Amme Fee; Fred Carter, Lawrence McLaughlin, Donald Green, Heber McLean;-Brian_Hamil- ton, Allen Rahm, Neil Bailey and Philip Langfeld. The! eel ting service wad held in St. John's, Church at 7.30 p.n., conducted jointly by the Rev. J. H: Kidd, Rector - of the Parish from 1907 to 1917, and the present Rector. The Lesson was read by Rev. Earl Sigston; Rector of St. John's Church, Bowmanville. The Special Preacher was the Rev. John McKibbon, Rector of Christ Church, Campbellford, who was Rector of Cartwright Parish from 1946 to 1949, and who was responsible for success- fully launching the Renovation Cam.' ; paian just. before leaving the Parish ' McKibbon took for his theme the incident of Moses turning aside to see the spectacle of in November 1949. A reception was-held afterwards on the Rectory Lawn, when Mr. 'and Mrs. McKibbon and their small daughter Margaret were assured once again of the warm good wishes and happy remembrances of their former parishioners .. Upwards of 300 people partook of the refresh- ments provided by the Woman's Auxiliary. Old friends, and members of the old Cartwright families gath- ered from far and near on this special occasion, and enjoyed much talk of the past, the present, and the future. On Monday, August 28th, celebra- tions continued, with Ball Games in the afternoon, organized by Dr. J. A. McArthur, -when™ Mr. Dick Davidson brought lads from Nestleton and um- pired Nestleton and Blackstock teams. A most-splendid supper was provided 'by the Woman's: Auxiliary, when some 300 persons ate with evident apprecia- tion of the variety of good things served. - This was followed by an ex- "cellent three hours of Motion Picture . programme, suited to all tastes. Bishop then Administered the Rite of | The special feature of the evening was the showing of Kodachrome slides of the men of the Parish at work on the reno- vation of the Church and Rectory, followed by the sound film hymn "Faith of our Fathers"; in the sing- ing of which the audience heartily joined. Hesketh, Rector of St. Paul's, Lindsay, with Mrs, Hesketh, attended as Rural Dean, as special speaker of 'Mr F. A. The chairman of the 'evening was Creighton P. Devitt, Rector's Warden, whose Father, John IL. -Devitt, was on the original commit- tee responsible for the building of the stock in the year 1876.
