He told a dinner meeting attended by Liberal members of the Ontario Legislature and their wives, that dis- tributors were able "to raise the retail price: of milk- almost .at will because there is no proper board, truly vepre- sentative of the producer, the con- sumer, the distributor and the gov- ernment, to rule on milk prices." ~~ > Plan to Probe Market for Area Growers (Oshawa Daily Times) One of the main subjects brought up for discussion at the annual meet- ing of the.Ontario and Durham Coun- ty Berry Growers Association held in Whitby Town Hall -was the question 'market in the area, Although no concrete action was taken by the meeting, Mrs. R. S. Cunningham of Brooklin and Ivan Law Whithy were appointed to in- vestigate the matter. The subject was raised by Mrs: Cun- she has just come, and wanted to know why a city the size of Oshawa didn't have a market. "I think Oshawa should be able to sus- tain a thriving market," she said. Charles Bickle of Bowmanville, chairman of the meeting, suggested that in erecting their new municipal building the City of Oshawa should. make provision for a market. "There is no need for a big closed-in market since only fruit and vegetables would be sold |," he said. Seen As Profitable Venture He believed that both farmers-and city would find this to be a profitable venture within the first month's oper- ation. It was suggested that the trade anions in Oshawa should be inform ed of the advantages of having a market, It was felt that if they learned that they could get a better quality-produets at a lower price; they would get behind the farmers in their work for a market. Ilustrated Talk At the beginning of the meeting Fred Bunting of Ajax, representative gave an illustrated talk on good gar- dening practices and the proper set- ting out' of berry plants and small fruit trees. He showed several slides of new types of raspberries which have been developed at the Experimental Farm at Ottawa and quoted figures obtained at this farm from 10-year average of fruit yield per acre showed that cer- tain of these new types could almost double the yield of older types, He the fact that there just as hardy as older types and in fact had been developed with a view to making them hardier than types now grown.
