CLIF., PETHICK, Auctioneer ANANSI SI IIIS ISN CANADA'S SUPPLY OF TECHNICAL PERSONNEL SHOWS MARKED GROWTH IN SIX YEARS The number of professional engin- cers in Canada has increased by 60 per cent during the past six years, it was revealed by Hon. Milton F. Gregg, Minister of Labour, recently. nieal Personnel Division of the De- partment, Mr. Gregg pointed out that due to the heavy enrolnient of World War Il veterans at Canadian univer- sities, there had been substantial in- creases in the supply of all technical and professional personnel since. 1946. The Minister suggested Canada's in- vestment in War Veterans education was now paying off in these days of strong demand for higher production levels and a corresponding demand for specialists in many lines. In arriving at the b0 per cent in- crease in engineers allowances had been made for deaths and retirements. Of 'the principal branches of the en- gineering field the highest propor- tionate increase was in chemical en- gincéring which showed a rise of 80 Apply at In. reviewing a report of the Tech- |. per cent. Electrical, mechanical and -metallurgical were. close to the aver- age of 50 per cent. Civil and mining increased 36 and 16 per cent respec- tively. In the honour science courses, the greatest rate of growth was in geo- logy with 60 per cent. Biology, and physies graduates increased in num- bers by about 30 per cent. Chemistry, thei largest group among the natur 1 sciences, increased by about' 10 per J cent, In other fidlds of 'seientific train- | ing, forestry and agriculture both ex- perienced sibstantial increases, the existing supply having nearly doubled in six years. An examination "of - existing enrol- ment in the universities revealed that the rate of growth is likely to decline sharply for the next few years. It is expected that 'in' some, fields of training the supply of new graduates will fall short of the demand, but over a limited period the effect of any such deficit. in new supply may not be too serious. Trends in enrolment will be closely studied by .counsellors, educational authorities, and professional bodies for some years to ensure that the im- portance of an adequate supply of well trained students is emphasized. At the present time the Department through its Technical Personnel Di- vision was completing an up to date registry of all scientific and technical personnel in Canada, Co OE CROWN INSURANCE COMPANY Consult the Crown Life Man CEC.
