Thames St., Ingersoll, Ont. August 18th, 1961. * Mr.- Thomas McNeill, - Port Perry, Ontario. Dear Sir: a In reference to your letter of August 16th, concerning conditions in Ingersoll since the establishment of a Brewers Retail store. : i For your information: From a business viewpoint it has ~ been an overwhelming success." We have not one vacant store in the town and some of the previous critics, against prohibi- 'tion being repealed, will now state that country trade has im- proved tremendously. Furthermore, many of our local citizens - now shop in Ingersoll instead of going to nearby cities where sale of spirits is legal, Re, Since the establishment of the store there has been four convictions for drunkeness--Not a very bad condition for a town of nearly 7000 people.after an era of 87 years of so called . prohibition. / Sao: : : : There has not been one word of criticism from any group 'or individual since the inception of the new store, in fact, many formér opponents now admire the modest structure (as- it sessed at $7.600) that has heen erected 700 feet from our.' 'Town Hall. Incidently, the town will receive $668.91 in taxes 'that hitherto was rion-taxable other than a vacant lot. fi ¥ Upon the whole, the majority of the citizens--both wet and dry--seem more contented. Trade has improved and much of the bitterness that once existed between merchants and cus- tomers has disappeared. Even local industrialists will tell you that absenteeism has been eliminated, especially after payday or along week-end holiday, i : ; = My own private observation ia that I am seeing strangers on the streets and in stores that I had never seen before. They are coming from the cduntry and nearby dry communities to make their purchases in'Ingersoll. Previously, they had to go . eeecccctcccttcrertittttsettsterstittcsstssetersee PELL RLLLLLLLLL 000000004 90000000004 - § . to Woodstock or London for their wants, They save ofl, gas - and time and I believe it was a chap named Shakespeare that coined the phrase "Time is money." : y I will gladly give you additional information and you are certainly permitted to make the contents of this letter pub- lic if you so desire. : LI 2 : ; Sincerely, Stanley J.
