Uxbridge 162 r- 15 rm PPA -- Fire Prevention In these uncertain and ominous days of unprecedented danger, fire safety must be recognized as highly impor- tant for the security of our citizens and country. In building up our armed Yorcos, and the production of armaments, ete. every effort is being made to Intcinate this additional burden with the nom- inal economic structure and this is putting a strain upon every Canadian, --in dollars and work, therefdve, if we are to avoid crippling these efforts by needless destruction and the un- warranted draining of our productive capacity, every citizen should deem it his duty to exercise vigilance against fire, explosion and other perils. There must be developed, in all Can- adians, a full awareness of the great understanding of our country to pro- duce all the necessary materials for the 'defence of democracy, and how this - could be materially affected should there occur any catastrophic fire. Fire peril consciousness is a "must". That fire is "the great destroyer" is a realization born of many sad occur- ances, as witness the recent fire in the Hospice St. Cunégonde, Montreal and the loss of thirty-five lives. Experience has taught us that fire has a greater large-scale damaging | potential "to facilities, supplies and 'man-power than any other hazard that is subject to physical control. : In undertaking the responsibilities of adequate fire preventive measures, it must be realized that all safety en- deavours are, in their broadest inter- pretations, co-operative projects call- ing for collaboration and planning by all, _concerned. Let us all drop the apathetic attitudé that seems to govern us. Let us be more careful, as statistics prove that more fires are caused through carelessness than any- thing else. Accortling to the latest statistics fire ' losses in Canada for 1950 approximat=' ed. $66,000,000, and these figures do work NORMAN DEPOE Filling in some of the details in the picture of Canadian and World happenings which comes to us through radio and press news reports, is the job of the nationally heard program "CBC News Roundup" Each day, 'spoken despatches. from contributors throughout Canada and around the globe are transmitted to Toronto for editing by Nor- man .DePoe--seen here, checking over a tape-record commentary-- into the 16-minute show of on-the-spot reports which follows the national news bulletin every weekday ond the CBC Trans-Canada net- Ge EA gt tar bee ts J Lakeview Theatr, Port Perr ~~ * Two Shows Nightly--7 and 9 p.m. SE Cm Sdn gin ps vs on COMEDY, ETC. At the same time, interest in the plowing competitions seems to be great. This has resulted, in part, from the addition of contour plowing competitions in this year's program. ' Mr. Lashley goes on to say that he has received assurance of at least two entries by championship plowmen from the United States. + Humphries, who was declared contour plowing champion at the National and ! Missouri Plowing Matches. last Aug- ust, will enter in the contour compe- titions, while Leo Drake of Memphis, Missouri, the level land plowing champion of the same event, will en- "ter one or more classes at the Inter- national. The Citizens League is vigorously opposed to the opening of a Brewer's Retail Store in Port Perry for two cardinal reasons. ~(1) Our village is not large enough to stand the "gaff" of more easily procurable alcoholic beverages: Our business section is only 1% blocks long and to place in that small area a Brewer's Store. would hurt and offened a lot of good citizens who may have sincere persgnal reasons to really hate alcohol.
