Wrong in Feud with Farmers (Toronto Telegram) could hunt any where, and no blan- kety-blank farmer was going to stop them. They proceeded to tramp across my garden 40 yards from the house. Later a rifle bul- let crashed through one window of my house and proceeded thru the room, emerging on the other side. In my bee yard I found at lease five hives that had bullet holes in them." and a hunter or angler has no right to trespass than he has to tramp over your front lawn or garden. That evi- dently is not generally understood. I discovered many things that sur- prised mé when I started to in- vestigate why farmers, and thru the farmers, the township coun- cils in Southwestern Ontario had opposed a deer hunt. Sure, they admitted that deer were doing harm and would probably do much more as they increased ". . but they preferred the damage done by deer to the hazards of an open deer season. My conclusion is that sportsmen-farmer relations are at a low level. Writing off a few bilious farmers who couldn't get along with the anglers--and we have many of the same type in cities--the sportsmen are 90 per cent. to blame. - The-evidence is _| that farmers opposed an open sea- son on deer to guard against loss to property, livestock and their own lives. One farmer was hav- ing supper with his wife before sundown when a .22 bullet smash- ed the kitchen window, caromed off a salad bowl and punctured a stove pipe. Another found one of hig steers limping and picked four pieces of bird shot out of its hip. Another one had his collie dog shot, and still another claims hunt- ers shot and carried off two of his tame ducks. - He saw them grab the ducks and run for their car, but he was too far away to get the license number, Here's what one farmer said: "On the morning of the pheasant shoot, three cars parked at my gate and five hunters and .two dogs got out. and proceeded: to climb over the fence, not through the gate, which was less than 380 yards away. I told them this was private property and I did: not per- mit hunting. They lifmediataly told 'mein a threatsning manner houg tenseq and Another farmer, whom I took to at once because he was a fisheman . and a friendly fellow, said: "I have a trout stream on my farm, properly posted with signs. Not one out of 50 has the courtesy to ask me if they can fish. They just barge in without permission. Sure- ly the time it takes to knock at the door and ask permission is worth a4 couple of hours' fishing." I wonder how many city Joes would tolerate this behavior? This sort of nonesense, this boorish, ar- rogant disregard for the rights of property owners is going to kill hunting 'and fishing in Southern Ontario. You who like. to get away for a few hours in the fields, or woods, or on a stream had better make up your minds right now. whether you are going to stand idly by while unprincipled "hood- lums who call themselves sports- men are going to ruin your sport, Township councils have the authority to stop all hunting in their townships. Just imagine what would have happened if all the deer hunters who did not get deer had decided to take advan- tage of an open deer season in the agricultural area of Southwestern Ontario. "About 80,000 purchased licenses and roughly 36,000 got a deer, No wonder the farmers said "no open season on deer."
