Jr. Cagers * Oust St. Peter's 44-19 MEET PORT HOPE JN *¢ LAKESHORE FINALS Carrying a slim two point lead into te second game in a total point series the Port. Perry. High School . junior basketballers came up with their: best game of the season to coast to a 44- 19 victory at the expense of the high- ly rated St. Peter's squad here Wed- nesday evening. Board put the visit- ors-on even terms in the total point race as he sank a stratght-on rebound for the first basket of the.contest. The home lads came. right back with a passing attack terminated by Don Hadden who hit the ring from the corner, From then on the Port lads never trailed. While the home squad carried the offensive early' in the game they lost the ball frequently when guard Ed. Drake was called for moving his pivit foot. The only successful efforts in the first quarter for Port Perry were single field goals by Dobson and Owen which, with Hadden's basket, gave them six points, Meanwhile the - visitors were having little luck and Quinlan's two points, along with Board's early shot brought their first period tally to 4 points. The secondperiod was_another low scoring affair with Ed. Drake hitting with two long shots to keep the Port up another two-pointer. St. Peter's managed only twa successful free throws during the same period, these going to Ryan and Simonds. The second quarter tally read Port Perry 13, St. Peter's 6. The low scoring during the first half seemed to be partially due to the small floor but to a greater extent to the tight defensive formations set up by the respective teams. The Peter- borough squad nsed a tight zone and Port Perry countered with a general zone type while either Don Hadden or Paul Peel was tagging the smooth- working Galvin of St. Peter's. When Galvin left for a rest, after accumu- lating four fouls, the locals set up a straight strong zone. The third quarter saw the visitors come up with their best offense of the game as they tallied 13 points, Legros tallying five, while Quinlan accounted for seven. Meanwhile the homsters got a fast break clicking. with Jack Owen heing the pay-off man as he snatched perfect set-ups from War- riner, Lawrence and Peel that resulted in four baskets. Gary Lawrence who was doing some fine rebounding as well as ball handling and when he got anywhere near the scoring terri- tory his shooting was dead on with the result that he picked up six points, two of these being on free throws. With Dobson's "basket the home crew picked up 16 points in the third quarter to run their count to 29; thus Port Perry had a 29-18 advantage at the end of the third stanza. But the fourth quarter was the big one for the Port quintet, as Owen, Dobson and Peel were really flying, with Lawreence and Warriner pick- ing off the rebounds. The game final- ly,ended 44-19. This was the 13th victory of P.P.H.S. in 14 contests. AAAAAAAAANPAAAAPAAAPNAA, Fur trading is not a thing of the past in Canada by any means.
