There are 7,813 miles included in the provincial network of King's High- ways and it is supplemented by 2,710 miles of Secondary Roads, King's Highways and Secondary Roads' are fully maintained by the Ontario De- partment of Highways, However, preponderant bulk of the total mileage includes county and township rural roads and the urban streets of municipalities and settle- ments constituting the Province of On- tario. That mileage is the respons- ibility of municipal councils, road com- missions and boards, elected or ap- pointed to promote and safe guard the interests of those who travel in or through their respective domains. Municipal responsibility. extends over 70,366 miles of roads, and the Municipal Road Branch of the On- tario Department of Highways ad- ministers provincial aid toward the cost of the improvement and main- tenance of each and every one of miles. That aid takes the form of mone- tary subsidies, technical supervisors, engineering guidance and, in many areas provision of road building equip- ment, . Figures just given featured address at June 4, spring meeting of the Parry Sound Municipal Association, held in the new Parry Sound High School building, by J. M. Maclunes, chief engineer of the Municipal Roads Branch of the Ontario Department of Highways, which, he pointed out, "Covers quite a large field", and that provincial subsidies distributed by the Branch "in accordance with the High- (way Improvement Act of Ontario", totalled $26,890,782 in 1951. Ontario's Department of Highways, Mr. Maclnnes said early in his ad- dress, "exerts great influence on pro- 'vineial development. It is divided into three main Branches, namely: High- ways, Municipal Roads and Motor Vehicles. "The provincial system of first and second class highways are the show windows of the Department and I wish to pay tribute here to all responsible for their condition from Chief Engi- neer, C. H, Nelson, down to the fore- men and maintenance crews. All are doing a fine job under the able direc- tion of Hon. George H. Dousett, the the Minister of Highways and his Deputy, Mr. J. D. Millar. "It is most interesting to watch) Highway construction or improvement Engineering ingenuity and overcome most obstacles and difficul- ties. Together, they produce roads having easy grades and alignment $# | which can be travelled with maximum £ | safety and mininium effort. "Official figures just released show % | that there are close to 10,623 miles of &| first and secondary highways in On- #8 |tario for which the Department of 2 | Highways assumes responsibility. They link up and give access to all § the main centres of the province. Of this amount, the Départment's ob- ligation was $26,890,782. > 4 3 re Ch PATRI: L375 "To assist in adminie®ation of the Highway Improvement Act as it con- cerns Ontario's vast network of muni- cipal roads, the Municipal Roads Branch administration is divided into 19 districts. Each of these Municipal Roads Districts, has a resident En- gineer who, in most instances, has an assistant. We urge municipal road authorities never to hesitate about consulting with them. Close co-oper- ation between Municipal Road Auth- orities and Department of Highways officials always means the bettering of municipal roads on which the pro- gress und well-being of the various municipalities and the province as a whole so largely depend. -- SCUGOG The Centre W.
