A ESR! 1 SEE =< _ SPORTS RE-PORT by Bil Fitsell : PORT ATHLETES TALENTED AND LUKCY-- Ina day of sé many spectator sports _. too, few participant sports, this village is fortunate to have such an active group of track and field athletes. In most centres if some teen-agers wére requested to run around the tiack or to high jump they would likely tell you to take a jump. Most youths have some' talent for track and field but in few centrés has it been: cultivated like here in Port Perry. . . . Coming from'a centre where track was something your elders excelled in years ago we are amazed at the number of High School students who participate in the events of this sport which is one of the few, if not the last purely amateur sport, in Canada. It is a good sign to see the lads and lassies running, Jumping and leaping on the track and in © the field and pit events, Track develops the body and keeps the mind _, busy and clean.' Better Port Perry and District youth be running off with a baton'in a relay race than-thinking up some other way to "work off*excess energies. With local athletes in the midst of a number of track meets it is timely to salute the-high-school-board---- | Williams, O.CIV.1, take a ribbon was the 440 relay team, finishing second behind Bowmanville, _{ while the under 18 boys placed behind OCVI No. 1 relay team in the other -..}440 event. . LOCALS TO SEEK DURHAM CROWN-- "PORT PERRY's North Durham league champions, after consider- , able delay will seek the all-Durham crown and the John James Trophy starting at Orono to-night... With Orono playing in O.B.A, intet- mediate "C" ball there was talk of cancelling' the final series but manager ROSS McLEAN and the Orphans finally. decided on a best of three series . .". SATURDAY at three p.m, is the date and time for the second tilt here at the fair grounds. There's been some chatter - that BILL. HARPER will hurl for the locals as Orono are reported to be using their regular O.B.A, team, Not that we have anything against southpaw William but we hope both teams stick to their signed players and decide the championship according to the rules. However, there's no doubt with Harper working out there for Port and probably-West for Orono it would be quite an attractive tussle . . SUTTON GREENSOX and Little Britain Bluebirds started the final series for the Tri-County crown yesterday-in the Mariposa 'centre. Lindsay Walkwoods were forced. to drop out of the round-robin<ghen > several of their young team members left for school, college, hockey apd football.
