r---- LP -- *pérsons of' Gary ~~ Owen earned the pride to. enter the High School Track Finalists ~L. Parkinson GARY LAWRENEE AND JACK *a' 'OWEN IN ONTARIO H. 8. TRACK FINALS Two Aine all-round athletes from the Port Perry. igh School, in the vrenced and Jack | Ontario High School's Track and Field finals at 'Lake Cauchiching, Saturday, May 30th, by virtue of their success in the. COSSA finals held at. Oshawa on-Satyrday last. - Gary Lawrence, although pressed from the beginning, took an early lead in the Intermediate 440 yard run, and held it to the tape (as he was clocked ®. 67.2) to give him a first in'Central ntario High School Finals. (This area includes Oshawa, Peterborough, Lindsay, Pickering, Trenton, Midland, Orillia and numerous small centres throughout the district. Lawrence's time was well over 2 seconds faster than the winner's record in the same meet last year. : The all-time Ontario H.S. intermedate record for the 440 was set last year and is about 63 seconds, (Lawrence had previously won the COSSA semi- finals on Monday afternoon.) Jack Owen won his first mile in competition on Monday of last week and then running in his first two mile, was close second in the COSSA finals 2 mile open event Saturday to qualify for: the Ontario finals this week-end. Owen's Ume v was appprox. "12 minutes. . We stand correction on this point, but we feel that these two lads are very - probably making history for their school, when they compete in the Ontario Secondary School finals this Saturday. Included in the finals com- petition Saturday will be the track and field stars from Toronto, Hamilton, London, Windsor, Sudbury, etc., some of whom without a doubt 'will be re- presenting Canada'in the Olympics in 1946. This, we are'stating merely to stress the type of competition Owen and Lawrence will be privileged to meet and 'compete with at Lake Couchiching,. = + Both George Cochrane and Sinclair Robertson from the P. P.H.S. deserve] mention of their fine showing on Sat- urday as théy combined with Owen and Lawrence to take third in the COSSA relay finals for Intermediates and ran an impressiye 880 and 2- mile respectively. 0AC C. Tr Track : And Field Meet If all the calories burned up by high school track and field men recently in this part of Ontario 'were laid end to 'end, they'd probably stretch from here to Lake Coucliiching. And that's about what's happening, too. Because many of those track and field men--with a resplenished supply of calories -- will go to the Ontario Athletic. Commission Camp at Lake Couchiching near Orillia; Saturday (May 30) to compete in the fifth an- nual All-Ontaria track meet. = The meet is held by the Ontario Federa- tion of School Athletic Associations. About 260 of the best athletes in the province will be present for the affair which is the culmination of weeks of competition in the various areas of Ontario. ; For the big meet Saturday, the pro- vince is sliced into eight divisions-- Western, Northern, Central, Eastern and Niagara sections, plus. Hamilton, Toronto and Toronto district. Each trackman will compete as 4 member of one of those teams, and the team piling up the most points becomes the owner of the Manufacturers Life Trophy. And in the last few days there's been a lot of discussion about who will win the Trophy, Toronto has cap- tured. it for the last two years. But their confidence in a third time win has been shaken somewhat by excel- lent performances reported from other areas. Western Ontario will send- a particularly strong contingent this year, headed by John K err of Wind- sor Kennedy Collegiate who was call- 'ed by Don Conham, track coach at University of Michigan; "one of the (Continued in column 4) DANCE Adults 50c.
