Bickell, Registrar of motor vehicles of the Ontario. De- partment of Highways, emphasized the need to avoid driving when tired. "Fatigue," he said, "especially during the summer months, is the significant "| factor in a large number of motor vehicle accident." " "At this time of the 'year, motorists are driving distances they are not accustomed tp, on week-end trips and annual vacations." "Take a ten minute break after two hours and have a cup of tea or coffee." It's dangerous to drive at any speed when fatigued--at high speeds it is suicide. * Se was an ardent angler and hunter and enjoyed skiing and skating. The large concourse of friends at Lia 4 Ingratitude foa Reporter. (Cobourg Sentinal' Star) . The ingratitude of many people whose names and doings appear in a newspaper is probably the biggest {thing of its kind. The person who borrows your lawn mower and runs it over stones, following which he neg- lects to have it sharpened is ungrate- ful.- He is further ungrateful ol he buys a new one andirefuses end it to you while your o wetting repaired, but it happens. 1» The person who borrows your silver- ware and réturns-it with two farks gone, from a pattern you can't replace is as bad. There are many more of them but none, 'not one of them can match the ingratitude of the public as a whole when it comes to'a newspaper's cover- age. i A reporter covered a 'local story recently. He spent three hours at the event, The next morning he devoted three hours straightening up the story, choosing what he thought was best and what would appeal to the reader end of the story. Later an editor spent half an hour editing the copy and still later a lino- type operator spent an hour setting it in type, Last action of all, a com- positor spent time setting it in a page. There the individuality of the story ends, With others it was ; printed and -dis- tributed. In all nearly eight hours of the com- bined time of four people was spent The cost of the hours, type, and the ten other things are not eomputed here. It would be useless to do so, some one would smile and say: "What! that story cost that much, that's ridiculous." Yet the cost of the story broken down by an expert would be startling- ly high, : Did anyone say what a fine effort it was? Certainly not! holes were vo picked in it by the people who could least of all write it and who had the smallest part of the setting. Did it disgust anyone, this ingratitude? No chance, the re- porter is used to it, the editor is used to- it, néwspapermen have been used to it since the first story ever printed appeared in: the castles of Europe. Some of those early newspapermen lost their lives over'the stories, all we are in danger of losing is jour sense of humor, a fate we fear worse than death, . rr -- fr ---- Re-Surfacing Roads In Port Perry Many sections of roads in Port Perry have received a new. surface during the past couple of weeks and are affording much pleasure to mot- orists who had been darting hither and yon on some streets to avoid the holes.
