Ontario County Council When the Ontario County Council meets on Wednesday, among other items of business the question of cap- ital grants to hospitals will excite considerable debate. 2 This matter was brought to the fore much earlier this year when a depu- tation appeared before County Coun- cil requesting financial assistance with the enlargement of Oshawa General Hospital. At that time it was stated that 25 per cent of the patients using the Oshawa General Hospital were from the county and while a figure was not stated it was intimated that county council might consider. financial assis- tance up to 26 per cent of the cost of addition, which would be a grant of | well over $250,000. MOTIONS DEFEATED At that session a motion to make to Oshawa General Hospital a grapt of $1,000 per bed, on completion of the extension was defeated by a. sizable majority. A second motion the next day to grant Oshawa Hospitaal, Port Perry Hospital and Ajax and Pickering Hos- '| pital financial ald received more sup, port but also was defeated, COMMITTEE NAMED As a result of the many debates on the question a select committee was chosen by Warden H. Down to study : J the whole question of 'hospital grants, and discovered what other counties were doing and/the method employed. It is learned that this special com- mittee will bring in its report this week, and county eouncillors will have considerable more information to guide them than when the subject was first introduced. Ear i Every County Clerk in the Province of Ontario was requested to provide statements on annual grants paid by 'their counties towards the mainten- ancé of hospitals and the eapital con- [4 struction of hospitals. A compilation of the replies receiy- ed makes a very interesting study and one clerk in his reply closes his letter with a brief paragraph which will no doubt be echoed by members of County Council, He said, "This hospital 'question is always a headache to the councillors of both county, city and the county officials." But headache or not the question will be before County Council and the debate will be centered around the principle to grant or not to grant financial aid to hospitals serving the county? . If this question receives an affirmative vote, the question will be How Much? ONTARIO COUNTY GRANTS Hitherto the County of Ontario has }# made a total of $11,000 in construction grants in the past ten years. Ajax and Port Perry hospitals were bene- ficiaries to the extent of $5,000 each.
