This has angered Canadian parliamentarians .. . on both sides of the House of Com- 'mons and some say that they will de- mand a policy of retaliation if such a proposal is put into effect. The sug- gestion is that Canada retaliate by prohibiting shipments to the United States of vial raw materials of which Canada is a principle supplier and en- Joying almost a monopoly. /* Quite recently a Bill was introduced | to amend the Railway Act, particular- ly dealing with the amounts allotted for the construction of grade cross: ings, which is under the supervision of the Board of Transport Comfhission- ers. This is known as' the Railway Grade Crossing Fund, Up until now the 'Board. had at its disposal an a: mound of $1,000,000, and this has been increased to $56,000,000. It has been the practise for the Board to contrl- bute towards any of this work to the extent of 409 from the Railway Gra- de Crossing Fund, the balance being' divided equally between the parties concerned, such as the 'municipality and the Railway, and/or the Provin- cial Government, 'where a highway was affected." It is proposed to raise the maximum contribution by the Bd. from 409 to 60%, the balance-to be divided'between the parties concerned. If a Railway and a municipality are the parties concerned, the Railway contribution is reduced to 16% of the amount and the municipality contri- bution to 259, so that there is some alleviation for the benefit of the muni- Cipality in these undertakings. Federal trade officials have report- ed to the Goyernment that the time is ripe for a drive to increase Canada's trade with Commonweatth countries. 'The outlook is said to be promising for 1956. ' 1 A Brusellosis Control Bylaw . In 1953 the Brucellosfs Control Act was passed by the Ontario Legislautre, This act has been well received and to date nearly 200 townships in the province of Ontario have passed the by-law. It has bean recognized for several years that calfhood vaccination is the best method available at the present time for the control of Brucellosis or Bang's Disease in cattle. 'When any township council receives a petition upon which appears the names of two- thirds of the cattle owhers in the tip. it is necessary for the council to pass. the necessary by-law requirng that all female calves from six to nine ¥ months of age within the township be vaccinated. The township -council then appoints a committee of five to help administer the by-law." Thi? committee is compesed of thrice twp. people, two of whom must be farmers, the chief Veterinary Inspector, Dr. Worton 'from the - provincial Live Stock "Branch, "and the Agricultural Representative, : Upon the recommendation: of this Brucellosis Gominittee the' township council appoints inspectors" for the enforcenjent of .the aet and the regu- lations. "The inspectors then make a girvey of the part of the township lloted to each of them and make a the ages of six and nine months. These records ave sent to the Veterin- arians. Ther farmer may choose the Veterinarian whom he wishes ta do his work, 'The owner of the calves pays the Veterinarian for his services. 'In- spectors are paid for their services at the rate of 20c¢. for each-female calf vaccinated. This money "comes as a grant to the township from the Ontario Department of Agriculture. Last winter three townships in One tarjo County, namely, East Whitby, West Whitby, and Scugog passed the i vecord of. all female calves "between pA Brucellosis Control By-Law. Commit- tees were selected and inspectors ap- pdinted. The work is gbing on smoothly at the present time and all female calves between the ages of six and nine months are being vaccinated. Pickering - and Regch townships passed the Brucellosis Control By-law in February of this year. Committees und inspectors have been appointed.
