8--THE PORT PERRY STAR, THURSDAY, AUGUST 11th, 1956 Many Fires This Summer The exceptionally dry and hot sum- mer has kept the local fire brigade busier this season than for many a year. Largely grass or grain fires they have varied in size from very small to.those involving considerable "loss in stock and equipment. The local brigade have had calls up to two ot three ip' a single day. Several farmers in the, area have lost a field or more of grain and some have lost their threshing equipment. Those suffering the greatest loss in this district were Mr. Earl Tripp, south of Port Perry, who lost every- thing but cue tractor, and the Beeton Farms, north of Greenbank, where everything went up in smoke during threshing operations, We hope that the present cooler, damper air will continue for a while. r---- Wood is of ever increasing value as a commodity, . If builders still used as'much wood as they did, thirty years ago in building houses, Canada's for- est products industries couldn't fill their needs, RELAX THESE HOT NIGHTS IN THE COOL, COOL ROXY. Ed Sullivan To Present Cattle Awards Ed Sullivan, star of the grandstand show at this year's Canadian National Exhibition, isn't 'going to spend all his time. on the. stage when he comes to the EX, Mr. Sullivan, for the benefit of those who haven't previously heard, is. a farmer as well as being a television .| personality and a newspaper colum- nist, 4 . 2 And, in a recent conversation with CNE officials, he announced that he would present trophies to the top winners in Guernsey cattle classes at this year's show. Mr. Sullivan, in case you hadn't .guessed, has a top- flight-herd of Guernseys- and knows a winning heifer when he sees one, - Guernsey breeders, more than a little pleased at the announcement, are now out to put on a good show for the farmer-columnist-star.. They're planning the heaviest entry of the breed in EX. history, and the best quality in Guernsey classes seen in a cattle show in these parts. Mr. Sullivan is reported to be look- ing forward to the event with en- thusiasm matching that of Canadian Guernsey breeders, even though, none of his own herd would be entered. - After all it would be tough present- ing a trophy to "himself, Youre SO right ...80 often!
