March 16 Application Cards Preshyterial WMS Annual Meeting Shows Continued Faith and Optimism The 28th annual meeting of Oshawa Presbyterial Woman's Missionary So- ciety was held last week in North- minster United Church, Mrs, K. C. Hopkins presided and nearly 300 mem- bers were in attendance representing 18 auxiliaries, Mrs, Wilbert Jeffs, president of the Northminster 'W.M.S., welcomed the guests, < ; . Mrs. Arnold Wade, Newtonville, and Miss Clarise' Edwards were appointed delegates for the east and west section respectively to the school of leaders. "Mus. Gordon Pirie, treasurer, report- ed that the sun of $19,850 had been remitted to the branch treasurer. The allocation for-this year is $19,300. © Mrs. Ross Mowbray, literature secre- tary, stressed the need for more read- ing. : i A CHALLENGE During the morning Mrs, J. H. Me- Kinney, president, Bay of Quinte Con- ference Branch, spoke of changing pat- terns, a challenge to the Church divid- ing her subject under 3 headings, im- migration, new housing and pressure of materialism. With the millions of people trecking over the face of the earth the WMS could be in the front line to offer aid to all new Canadians' who were facing language difficulty and different customs. In the new housing areas the Church had a great opportunity to bring neighborliness and to cope with the spiritual needs by setting up new churches. The speaker 'warned against the pressure of ma- terialism crowding out the Church and urged the WMS members to cultivate a keen sense of urgency for tose out- side the Church. The secretaries' reports all showed a successful and busy year. The Ebenezer Afternoon Auxiliary conducted an impressive In Memoriam service for 35 members who died dur- in 1955. : . At luncheon, served by members of Northminster WMS, greetings were brought by the Rev. H. A. Mellow and Rev. C. W. Hutton, chairman of the Presbytery, and Mrs, M. Tamblyn of Orono, president of the Oshawa Pres- bytery Woman's Association. Simcoe Street WMS Afternoon Aux- iliary conducted the afternoon wor- ship. HOME MISSION - Miss Jean Stewart spoke work among 'the Japanése group at the "All People's Church, Hamilton. She spoke of the prayer meetings held by members in their homes and the charm of the social hour, Visual aids simplified the teaching of the Serip- tures, she said, and hymns were sung in both English and Japanese. The women had a well organized W.A,, all in Japanese, and held bazaars twice a year. Miss Stewart paid tribute to the West Coast Missions for the Christian teaching they had implanted in the older Jananese. Miss M. Bellman presented 20 cer- tificates to Mission Bands. Mrs. J. H. McKinney conducted the installation of officers with the fol- lowing three changes in last year's slate: recording secretary, Mrs. H. G. Lean, Bowmanville; secretary, Baby Band, Mrs, Frank Blunt, Bowmanville; candidate secretary, Mrs. D. Duchemin, Myrtle Station, A solo was sung by Mrs, Andrew Suwala, ~ Next year's annual meeting will be held in Whitby and the post executive 'meeting will be held at Maple Grove, March 8th. R.A CR A ICE CARNIVAL of Her, Honeydale W.L The Honeydale Women's Institute held its monthly meeting on Thursday afternoon, March 1st, in the Public Library with Mrs, Sam Cawker, presi- dent, in charge assisted by Mrs, Nelson Williams. All joined togéther in singing the Ode and repeating in unison the Mary Stewart Collect, Mrs, Williams brought to the mem- bers attention the annual Hobby and Handicraft Show to be held on April 7th at Pickering: Discussion followed." Mrs. Cawker paid tribute to the late Mrs. Alonzo Williams and read one of her favorite hymns. Her passing will leave a void that will be hard to fill. All joined in observing two minutes of silence to her memory. Conveners giving reports were: Mrs. Wm. Moase who spoke on-- "What is a good neighbour" ? and "Are You a good neighbor?" Mrs. L. Dawson on Citizenship and Education. : Mrs, Fines on Agriculture stressing the uses of cheese in our diet and that we should all use Canadian grown fruits and vegetables, if at all pos- sible, rather than imported. Mrs. Chapman on the motto; "Just Smile and keep Sweet." Mrs. Bassant was appointed to at- tend the hospital monthly meetings. Mrs. Bryant reported on the work be- ing .carried out by the Friday after- noon workers engaged in making can- cer dressings. They have finished 196 i assorted pieces and 22 bed pads: Any- one having used cotton or flannelétte suitable for dressing coverings is ur- gently requested to donate same. | Worn sheets, pillow slips or "any .of this whité' wear is badly needed to carry on this important work. The work room is upstairs in the post , office. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. Hook. Superintendent of the Com- munity Hospital. Her subject was, "Kmergency measures in the Home." She concludéd with some helpful sug- gestions for the home care of patients during convalescence. Miss Marie Fairman sang two solos, "Bless this House", and "Smiling Thro", in very pleasing manner. In conclusion Mrs. Smeltzer gave a reading: "What Hezekiah Thinks of the Women's Institute." A very lovely luncheon was served by Mrs. Day's group featuring a birth- day cake in honor of Mrs. L. Celebrates 80th Birthday A pleasant evening was spent re- cently at the home of Mrs. Margaret Burnett, when around 35 relatives of Mr. James Crozier, met to honour him on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The first part of the evening was spent in cuchre and other games. Later Mr. Crozier was asked to take the seat of honour, while his brother Norman Crozier, on behalf of those present, presented him with a gold wrist watch, and extended to him the congratula- tions and best wishes of all.
