The speaker. of the evening Jake Schulz, was intro- duced by the secretary of the Local} Mrs. G@6. Prosser. There were mém- bers present from most of the locals in Durham County. Mr. Schulz spoke of the work being done by the Farmers Union all over Canada. He called the Union of British Columbia the "Baby Union", The Union of Albert "Gréat Union"; the Union of Saskatchewan the "Big Union"; the Manitoba the "Solid Union; and the Union of Ontario the "New Union." Only from the Farm- ers Union will the farmers ever get a square deal. That is why we need union, There is nothing more impor- tant than union in this province, For the last twenty years we have been under an organization which has fail- ed to combine the strength of the farmer to overcome the-- recession which has been creeping up on us and now we have to pay for it. One nan I know has 47,000 bushels of grain in his grainary. - He borrowed $1,000 last year and another $7,000 this. year. Our wheat price has gone down forty cents to a price now of $1.40. We are right back- in the thirties. Farmers are getting desperate. They' should learn from the Canada Packers how to look after business, In 1951 Canada Pack- ers made a profit of seven million dollars and in 1953 -a profit of nine < \ million dollars which is a 27% <¢ profit on Capital investment. Can. you guess what farmers made in these two years. Farmers made a hundredth of one per cent which is nothing, What farmers] do when prices go down is just add one more hour and I am wondering Fiboiit One of these days when we will start' logking. for the' Lwenty-fifth hour, ers 'working 'all-day and going 'around in circles but. got to thinking if, this was' paying 'my. oxen should be rich. Let us-look at the price of 'milk-- one. quart of mike 22¢. One quart, of ginger ale 6c, "Milk is the greatest food drink 'in the wor]d and selling at 4c. below the price of gineger ale; Farmers will never save, themselves until they organize.and set up Market- ing Boards to control, Parity Prices." Today we hear about surpluses; and why all these surpluses. - "We could unload plenty of these goods for trade which we need but Mr, Howe says "No, we have to have dollars, nothing but dollars--British sterling." This is the craziest thing I have. ever seen in my life, In Japan there.is an unlimited outlet for our wheat and we could take] steel in exchange, but we can't deal with Japan, We have to deal with the United States. © The Unjted States 'Big Business have sewed us up in-a blanket and are choking us..If a Cana- dian - wants to buy a tractor to-day what can-he buy. "A John Deere, an International, "an Allis-Chalmers, a Case; all. Américan made machinés. Nobody can tell 'me why we have surpluses. 'You men: here have 'been paying $60, 00 a ton for screenings: That i 'méfe than we get for. No.1 wheat af 1 fort William, and do 'fyou know what: those screenings "fvere;. 989%". 'hickwheat and 2% That iS. now impossible. company cant sell anything which does not have 36% good grain, Before the Farmers {Union the elevator Ss took over three and a half million overages.
