The physi- cian--carrying the answer to almost every disease problem in his black * bag--often is considered impervious to the ailments he so successfully. ? treats. That is far from being the case. Medical history records innumenr- fiah able incidents in 7} which the physi- © cian has become a martyr, The influ- enzu virus, for in- stance, recognizes no professional bounds and can infect the physician as well as the carpenter More striking than these inci- dental exposures are instances in which physicians have deliberately infected themselves in do-or-die at- tempts to learn more about deadly ailments and their cures. One of the most famous of these medical martyrs was Jesse William Lazear, who was convinced that mosquitoes transmitted yellow fever. He proved his point by allowing himself to be bitten by a mosquito known to have fed on a yellow fever victim. Seven days later, Lazear was dead. Lazear's colleague, James Car- roll, buttressed his dead friend's theory when he also allowed himself to be Ditten by an infected mosquito. Carroll contracted yellow fever, but survived. Medical heroism continues today with "volunteers" testing new drugs aml vaccines. Dr. Jonas Salk in- jected himself and, later, his chil- dren with his killed virus polio vac- cine before he attempted any wide- spread injections. Thus, t the spirit of Jesse Lazear is still very much alive in the medical A number of neighbours helped Mr. C.
