The hard work was appreciated though, and all of the sixty-five or seventy teenagers and eve) a -- | the six adults enjoyed a very delight- ful evening... The dancing commenced at 8.30 p.m. with many fine records. Among the winners of the prizes for the balloon spot and the broom dances were Bill C Diane H., James H., Erika B., Floyd J., and Diane P, At 11.45 everyone lied up for hats and noisemakers and immediately after started the grand march. At 12. o'clock we sang Auld Lang Syne just before the net full of balloons was dropped. RAN Noise -and sincere good wishes [for a Happy New Year were express- ed by everyone. While the food com- mittee prepared a delightful lunch of sandwiches, pickles and punch our president Bruce, emceed a programme of entertainment, featuring the Cou- ves sisters, Jack Nottingham and Karol Espie. After the food had been finished dancing resumed until about 1.45 a.m. January 1st. 1957. The couples left with a tired but pleased expression on their faces. Wishing everyone a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. SCIENCE IN. | YOUR LIFE /. Ray of Hope X-ray radiation has long been "as much a tool for treating cancer as surgery, but new techniques have given the invisible "scalpel" a keener cutting edge. Since World War II radiation has been stepped up from one million to as high as three million volts, allowing larger total doses of X- "rays to be beamed to deep- 2 seated tumors and cancer tis. sues with fewer undesirable ef- fects on sur- rounding normal tissue. More recently, streams of mi- nute electrical - /@0 charges from the atom-smashing betatron have been directed at cancers in human pa- tients. And methods of revolving the patient through the beam-- resembling the familiar kitchen rotisserie--further pinpoint the at- tack so the tumor receives more radiation, and normal cells less. A minute pellet of Cobalt 60, the so-called wonder metal, has been p powerfully charged with ra- dioactivity,- ma ig 3 it the world's smallest X-ray ther: apy "bomb." The atomic pellet can be injected directly into the malignant growth where it gives off energy equiva- lent to a three million volt X-ray machine. 8 Regardless of the source of ra- diation, the treatment is painless and side effects are usually mild. Localized tanning or nine of the skin, much like sunburn, may develop. There may be nausea similar to motion sickness, or mild diarrhea. These side reactions may be relieved easily by the doctor with ointments for burns, the mo- tion sickness drug Bonamine for nausea, and other simple remedies. X-rays of course cannot be used against all cancers. Surgery, hor- mones, synthetic compoun s and even certain viruses are also employed.
