The dark wood and light lettering looks very well with the white building in the background. Mr. J. J. Gibson, who is the donor, is to be congratulated upon his forethought as the sign will be a definite asset to strangers looking for our hospital and an attractive adver- tisement to passing motorists. It is understood that the sign is to be flood lighted. -- Second Class Honours: Port Perry High Exam Results First Class Honours--769% and over Second Class Honours--66 - 749 Third Class Honours--60 . 659, Credit Standing--50 - 599, GRADE XII COMMERCIAL -- The following candidates are re- commended for the Secondary School Graduation Diploma . Letter to the Editor I'want to call attention of the rate- payers and citizens of Port Perry to the obstruction of a public street by certain individuals. Our reeve, Mr. Gibson, A. L.. McDermott and Mr. J. Raines are building boathouses across the east end of Beech street thus clos- ing of Beech street for access by the public to the water's edge. } Our street should be kept open for public purposes and if private persons wish to build boat houses they should do "so on their own property. By building on the street they do not only deprive the taxpayers and the public of the proper use of the street but they also avoid fair taxation. I suggest to the citizens of Port Perry that they see the situation for themselves and I call on the Reeve and Council to do their duty to the people of Port Perry and keep the streets free from private obstructions If this situation is justified then any of us would be justified in building our boat houses on Queen street. C. H~A Port Perry Taxpayer. Leland Second Warning Once again Port Perry Merchants | have received a very potent warning to be careful in accepting cheques to be cashed. Late last year forged cheques were passed on local merch-! ants. | This week MacGregor's Meat Mark- et and Dowson's Red & White Store were victims of this racket. i The cheques were made out in the name of a well-known customer of the merchants and were presented after banking hours to be cashed. It is believed that the forger must have been someone local as an attempt was made in one case to confirm the validity of the cheque by phoning the man whose signature was used but he proved to be out of town the! week-end. : A careful examination of the cheque in this case would have shown the en- dorsement corresponding with the signature--but this is not always the case. Extra care is advised in every case, Runaway Car Mr. I". Lintens, of Marquette St. Toronto, stopped on Queen St., to ask directions. He stepped out of his car and the car pulled away. Lintens tried to stop the car was dragged down the hill where his car struck one owned by Mr. Peter Gibson of Collingwood St., Agincourt, which was parked on the East end of Queen St. Extensive damage was done to the left rear fender of Mr. Gibson's ear! and the grill and radiator of Mr. Lin- ton's car were damaged. Police Chief Menzies investigated Hand Seriously for while using the jointer machine. The right hand was badly lacerated neces- siting the removal of part of the 2nd and 3rd fingers and skin grafting on I the palm. -- | 3 He was taken to Toronto General done by a specialist in this field. He will be in hospital for two or three weeks and is expected to spent some time in the Workmen's Compensation | Hospital for therapy in regaining the ! use of the hand. ! Orde Marine, where they stole an outboard motor and a boat belonging to George Rutherford of Oshawa, After enjoy- ing a ride on the lake they abandon- | 'ned the boat at the Causeway where they were picked up by the other boys, still driving the stolen Toronto car. Back in Port, Perry they stole Ken Jackson's "56 Dodge car and drove back to Toronto, abandoning the fir<t car on a side road. In Toronto the boys stripped Jack- of radio, spare tire, seat covers, floor mats, ete, leaving the car on a side street of the city to be picked up by Metropolitan police. On Iriday Chief Menzies of Port Perry got a lead on two of the boys and following up the information was able to take into custody all five youths, son's car Heavy Rains Cause Damage Heavy last week caused considerable flooding. Rate for Public Telephones in Port Perry The standard rate of 10 cents for each local call from public and semi public telephones became effective in Port Perry, Saturday, June 20th, ac- according to J. W. Lowery, Bell Tele- phone manager for this region. Approval in principal of the 10-cent rate for local calls from all Bell Tele- phones was given in November, 1951 by the Board of Transport Commis- sioners for Canada. However, because of equipment shortages at that time, the Bell asked for the higher rate to be applied immediately only in the larger centres. - With equipment to modify the public telephones in the smaller centres now installed, the company has decided to complete the application of the stand- ard throughout its territory. on, Len.
