Shareholders > increased during the year by 16,100 to 156,825, Ninety- eight per cent are resident in Canada and they own 92 per cent of the stock, Employees and pensioner sharehold- ers now number 13,300. The 41,363 men and women em- ployees of the Bell company received, during the year, $146, 962,660 in wages and salaries. At year's end, the company employed 24,346 women and 17,018 men During 1957, there was a net in- crease of 188,731 telephones in service in the Bell's Ontario-Quebec territory. This brought the year-end total to 2,054,884, This expansion was reflected in Port Perry by the addition of 60 tele- phones, J. Ww. Lowry, Bell manager for this region said, bringing the total in service here as of December 31, to 1360. "We. spent $177,300,000 on new con- struction, an increase of $37,800,000 over the previous year," the report reveals. "By far the greater part of our construction effort in 1957 was devoted to providing more customers with local service, and improving that service." A continuous effort is being made to increase productivity and therery help in keeping down both operating expenses and the cost of building new plant, the report notes. Net income for 1957 was $36,037,169, equivalent to $2.15 a share, compared with earnings of $34, 949,181 or $2.40 a share in 1956. The usual dividend of $2 a share was paid and surplus was increased by $2,134,488. Taxes amounted to $39,730,000.
