; ider By-law nirol Use Of Fireworks BOWMANVILLE--The police com. mittee will give consideration to the proposing of a by-law to curtain the indiscriminate use of firecrackers be- fore the Victoria Day holiday and on the public streets, Councillor 0. J. Presson, chairman of the committee told council at their regular meeting Monday night, Mr. Presson said the committee would give consideration to such a by- law with the following points in mind: limiting the sale of fire-crackers in town to a certain few days prior to the Victoria Day holiday; and, prohibiting their discharge on the public streets (other than possibly by a group go- ing together on a display). Some provisions would bé needed to permit the fireworks display at the annual picnic or on other. occasions that may occur, he pointed out. Mr. Presson also reported that pur- chasing fingerprinting equipment for the police department was approved by the committee at their recent meet- ing. He pointed out that in cases where thefts occur the premises had to be closed for one day or -more until outside police aid could be obtained -to conduct fingerprint investigation. 47th ANNUAL Thomson Given Coat Of Arms, Scots Tartan EDINBURGH, -- The Lord Lyon King of Arms arms and authorized a tartan for Roy Thomson, the Canadian publisher who is chairman of the Scotsman publica- tions and of Scottish Television Ltd. Extract from a speech by Mr. F. H. Ellis, General Manager, Ontario Safety League, to Kingston Junior Chamber of Commerce, May 12, 1958, "The male driver under 25, with the skill and ability to be the best driver on the road, has more than twice the number of accidents of the older man. He NEEDLESSLY lea- ves on the roads a trail of blood, mis- ery and economic destruction. And one of the dark stains of this vast, and continuing tragedy is that we--the adults--stand by and acqui- esce. Because the remedy is within our hands. We know that we can take a 16-year-old boy and, by giving him correct driver education in high school, make him at least as safe a driver -as his father", 6. Driving in a station wagon on a warm day with the back open may help to create that pleasant "conver- tible" atmosphere. But, warns the Ontario Safety League, it may also "help to create a vacuum that can suck into the car, carbon monoxide and other gases being discharged through: the exhaust. . i 2, A whole forest of erect left forearms indicates 'that Ontario mo- | torists are satisfied that the warm weather is here. It may soothe the ego of a driver to demonstrate, by using one hand to hang on to the roof, that he is giving less than his best to the job of handling his car. But, points out the Ontario Safety League, the "one-arm bandit" in a car is robbing himself as well as others of a fraction of the safety- margin which is the 'right, and. the responsibility of all road users. 3.
