Birth Mr. and Mrs, Robert Cawker are pleased to announce the arrival of a baby boy, Ernest James, Sept. 18th, 1958, at the Oshawa General Hospital, a brother for Wendy. 01d Landmark Discovered The Port Perry Yacht Club have been cleaning up the water front along their shore line and the Town has taken up at the edge of the Yacht Club property and continued across te street allowance (Mary Street). During this operation a considerable pile of big logs and stones was brought to the surface and delving back into the old records we find that this was once the Bigelow wharf. The lumber mill as located on the shore near by and the wharf was used for the handling of the timber. Mr. Bill Carnegie brought in an old surveyor's map dated 1854 which showed the location of this wharf and mill. The map itself is very inter- esting. The lower part of the town from Lilla street east is laid out pretty much as it is today. But from Lilla street west the town was re- surveyed and many of the streets are differently located and with differ- ent names. This 1854 map shows most of the section west of Lilla St. as still being wooded land. The surveyor was J. Stoughton Dennis. Among the items of particu- lar interest on the map are the names of Hill's Mill and Paxton's Mill both at the North end of Water street where Birdseye Center is now located. Jewell's Hotel and Winter's Inn are also indicated with several other buildings blocked in, none of which seem to correspond to present day structures. The corner of the map bears a "Chamber of Commerce" type of comment dealing with the lo- cation of Port Perry and ending with the following note: "A thriving village has already sprung up on its side (referring to Lake Scugog) within two or three years. The Business done in which in the Articles of Grain and Lumber has not been exceeded by any other village of the same extent in the Country--The attention of Mechanics and Merchants is called to this place as a highly desirable opening."
