(From Maclean's Magazine) If John Foster Dulles loses his post as the result of a Democrat win in 1960, U.S. foreign policy will continue along much the same lines as at pre- sent, says Blair Fraser in the current Maclean's. Even with Adlai Stevenson as see- retary of state -- and Fraser feels Stevenson is Dulles' logical successor --the chances are that the U.S. would still refuse to admit Red China to the United Nations. At the same time, writes Fraser, a Democratic regime might he expected to adopt a sterner attitude toward Chiang Kai-shek and would be less likély to insist that other Western countries back U.S. policy on China. Fraser describes Dulles as "dis- liked, distructed and denounced by more people in more places than any other man alive." But, says the writer, Dulles is the ablest man in the U.S. administration, has a powerful intellect, "strong personality and is a good friend to Canada. Fraser concludes: "Perhaps his Democratic successor will he able to strike a happy medium, and be liked both at home and abroad. On the other hand perhaps this happy me- dium doesn't exist. Perhaps the U.S. secretary of state, as the man who must guidé and take the blame for the policies of a global alliance, is foredoomed to be everybody's scape- goat: AGRICULTURAL CONVENTIONS TORONTO Jan. 26-- Ontario Swine Breeders Association, Royal York Hotel "lleges suspended in 1959, under the new Jan. 28--Ontario Sheep Breeders Association, Royal York Hotel 28--Holstein Friesian Assoc'n Royal York Hotel Jan. 28--Canadian Sheep Breedérs Association, Royal York Hotel Jan, 28-30--Ont. SCIENCE IN YOUR LIFE Today's Hidden Bargains The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statis- ties recently published some figures showing that the cost of living has climbed 56 per eent during the last ten years. Food prices have gone up even further - to buy a bag of proceries that sold for $10.00 in 1947 now costs $16.70 But lucky for consumers, the price merease on some goods has lagged behind in this post-war cost spiral and these few products have suddenly become today's hidden oii Fugly The 2B; price of drugs and "y prescriptions, for -, example, accord ng to government * figures, has climb. en We LT 228 ed only 31 per A TR, cent since 1947 - ped a small .increase ~ in when compared to the 56 per cent hike in the total cost of living. Yer the price doesn't tell the whole story. The real reason why today's drugs are the biggest sav. ig in history is that they save lives besides money, In the past ten years, the U. S. Public Health Serv. ice estimates that drugs such as antibiotics, have prevented more than a million persons from dving of pneumonia, and as a result, the J ase - the second major killer in 1930 -- has now falien to seventh phtce on the nation's death hist.
