Port Perry Senior Hockey League With the Tri County hockey league rapidly drawing to a close; the Port Perry team has finished with a six game "unbeaten streak and is now solidly entrenched in third place be- hind Cannington & Sutton. Last Tuesday night the.team jour- neyed to Keswick and defeated the Comets by a 7-4 score. After trail- ing for most of the game the Port squad caught fire in the final 10 min- utes and fired home 5 goals in that time. Bill Gibson was the big gun y Vipond and Glen Till for Port Perry as he fired home b goals, with the others going to Sully George Lee suffered a facial cut that required 8 stitches to close, when he was cross checked by a Keswick player, who has since been suspended by the league. 'The team has been critically short of players lately due to the G.M. night shift and injuries, but with Bill Cor- nish and Johnny Hogg due to start playing again shortly, this situation will improve. ; : On Wednesday night the team play- ed the Sutton Greenshirts in the Sun- derland arena and in a real thriller On Wednesday, January: 28, 1959, starting at 7 p.m. Port Perry Hockey Club held a special night in connec- tion with MINOR HOCKEY WEEK IN CANADA, Four teams from the house league took part. The first game ended in 'a tie between the Bruins and the Hawks. The score being one - one. McNenly scoring for the Hawks and Pickard for the Bruins. * ~ The Second game was a thriller with the Rangers just edging the Tel- cos by a score of two to one. The Telcos outskated the Rangers but just couldn't seem to find the goal. Barry Beare and John Raines scored for the Rangers and Rickey Snooks for the Telcos. After these two games draws were i I held for hockey sticks donated by the Whitby Dunlops, John Chazewski from the Dunnies made the draw. The winners for this were Grant Dawson and Glen Sweetman. The Boys selling the most Booster pins won sticks donated by the Tor- onto Maple Leafs. Through the good effort of Col. McBrien and also the Whitby Dunlops manager Wren Blair supplied the remaining sticks. The top seller was Billy Hall. The next four 'best salesmen were John Riba, Dennis Short, Ron Short and Ray- mond Hillier. . . Each Captain was given crest for his team. Thére were eight captains present. At the end of the first period dur- ing Midget game the big 50-50 club draw was held and: Gord Hawes an O.M.H.A. Representative from Whitby drew the name of Sam Jackson, Jr. The Midget game was O.M.H.A. and Uxbridge beat Port Perry 6 - 1. These two teams hope to meet again in the play-offs. It should be a real cuban ball. . All in all it was quite a night BUT there are still a few parents not show- ing up for these special nights to help support their children, Week PAINTER - FILION WEDDING On Friday evening, January 80, Elizabeth Faye Painter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Hervey Painter, became the bride of Joseph Arthur Fernand Filion, son of Mr. Arthur Filion of Oshawa, at a ceremony performed by Rev. J. K. Braham in Prospect United Church. Given in marriage by her mother and father, the bride looked lovely in her balerina length white velvet dress with long sleeves and v-shaped neck- line. Her finger-tip veil fell from a crown of pearls and sequins. She carried a white bible, gift of her par: ents, with a red rose and small rose- bud streamers. The soloist was Mrs. Kaye Smith, who sang the wedding prayer during the ceremony and "Because" during the signing of the register. Mrs. Frances Sanderson played the wed- ding music, Maid of honour for her sister was June Painter, wearing candy _pink velvet with matching headpiece and carrying a bouquet of white. mums and pink roses. Groomsman was Ronald Hore and ushers were Stanley and Rodney Painter, brothers of the bride. Receiving, the bride's mother wore nile green crystallette with beige ac- cessories and a corsage of yellow roses. The couple will reside in Oshawa. Raines, of Port Perry, was the scene of a gala celebration honouring the birthday of Mrs. George A. Raines, who was 87 on February 2nd. Mrs. Raines was born in Port Perry and has spent her life in the surrounding dis- trict She has been blessed with five chil- dren, Gus, who served in the First World War. Mrs. Alymer Byers, Mrs. Lloyd Midgley, Guy and Jack, all of Port Perry, three grandchildreen, Mrs. Bob Pickerd, of Port Perry, Mr. Jack Raines, Jr., of Port Perry, Allin and Ronnie Raines, of Port Perry, and Mrs. Don Fennell, of West Hill. The great grandchildren are Mrs. Sherman Greene of Oshawa, Mrs. Herbert Rit- ter, of Whitby, Johnny Fennell, West Hill and Johnny, Ralph, Janet and Paul Raines of Port Perry. A friendly manner, a lovely smiling face, twinkling gray eyes, and an un- furrowed brow, lily snow white hair, and a family Bible that records her birthday, February 2nd, 1872. ' Among her sunny days there have been many cloudy hours, but grandma has always found a silver lining by burying her own sorrows by helping others. She married a farmer at the early age of 19, and raised five chil- dren, two girls.and three boys to man- hood and woman hood, and instilled in thém the highest morals. Her faith in God upeld her when she lost her cldest son in a tragic accident after he had gone through the first world war and had returned home safely. Grandma has kept young at heart with first her love for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchil- dren. Grandma is loved by all for her un- selfish, loving disposition. She is grandma to each child on the street, her cookies and eandies have dried the tears from many childish woes, young and old have chesished her sym- pathy and advice. 1 love grandma for all the nice things she has dohe for us.
