In the past, when. a patient needed blood, they either had to pay the sum of $25.00] or replace the blood by finding two donors. "However with this new blood scheme, the Red Cross have un- dertaken to supply all the hospitals with blood, free of charge to anyone who is in need of it. This free blood service should cover the whole of Ontario by July 1st. It is the responsibility of the local Red Cross Branch to supply the donors, and it is up to the Blood Transfusion Service of the Canadian Red Cross Society to provide trained technicians to collect the blood, process it and de- liver it to the hospitals. Fresh blood can only be kept 21 days, and so what blood is not used within that period is brought back to the Red Cross De- pot.. - This unused blood is sent to the Connaught Laboratories where it is made into blood by-products used in the hospitals in the prevention and treatment of many diseases; ! Although Red Cross Blood Clinics can only be held in cities and towns where a certain amount of donors can be found, many of the hospitals re- ceiving this free blood will be in areas where ro clinic is possible. It], therefore is necessary to take that in- | to consideration when the objective is | § The Red Cross Branch in |g Uxbridge therefore would be grateful | 8 | for any donors from Port Perry. 5 It is hoped that the people from |g Port Perry will contact either Mrs, |§ being set.
