New Telephone Directory Distribution of the 1959 edition of the telephone directory for Port Perry and other district centres got under- Good Allendatice al Weed Spray School The first Weed and Brush Spray School for Ontario County was held in the Township Hall at Sunderland, on April 23rd, with 35 people in at tendance. New techiques in application and new types of spray material are being developed all the time. The purpose of this spray school was to give those people in Ontario County who are in- terested, the latest and best inform- ation on chemical control of weeds and brush by spraying. Mr. Alex. Chisholm, May & Baker Chemicals, Toronto, took as his topic "New Chemicals and their use in Weed and Brush Control". He pointed out that now new chemicals, namely M.C. P.B. and 214-DB. much safer to use on grain fields that are seeded down than any chemicals that have been used in former years. . Mr. Bruce Chambers, United Co-Op of Toronto, by the use of Flip Charts illustarated the value of killing weeds; resulting in greater crop yields per acre. Professor Don Clark, 0.A.C., Guelph, gave a talk on "Spraying Operation and Maintenance". He emphasized the importance of having proper size and shape_of nozzle in order to do the best possible job. He also spent some time in explaining how to calibrate a spray machine in order to get the greatest possible accuracy in the ap- plication of the spray material. Mr. Ken Fallis, Field Crops Branch, Toronto, explained the Weeds Act. He stressed the importance of getting rid of weeks early before they have a chance to go to seed. Mr. J. C. Brethour, County Weed In- spector, and Mr. H, L, Fair, Agricul- tural Representative, spoke on the eradication of Barberry and Buckthorn they explained the Ontario County policy under which a farmer wishing to destroy Barberry and Buckthorn on his own farm can get free Brushkill for spraying these weed shrubs, Plans are being made at the present time to hold a similar Weed and Brush spray school again next year. Scott 4-H Club The organization meeting of the Scott 4-H Beef Calf and 4-H Clubs was held in the Department of Agri- culture Office, Uxbridge, on Friday, April 24th. Alvin Blades, Assistant Agricultur- al Representative, Uxbridge, extended a cordial welcome to the boys and girls and thejr parents. He empha- sized the importance of the 4-H pro- gramme as giving a training in good citizenship as sell as the practical training in the agricultural projects. The rules and regulations of the 4- H calf and 4-H grain clubs were dis- cussed and the use of the cost re- cords for each project was explained in detail, The election of the 1959 officers was conducted by Alvin Blades and the club leaders. It received the unani mous approval of council members. Mrs. Beckstead suggested that fire- works' sales should be banned for children under 18 years. She request- ed that no sales should be permitted until one week prior to the May 24th holiday. Dominion Day will be mark- ed on the following Monday. Reeve Sherman Scott agreed that the sale of fireworks had 'become a problem in built-up areas. He sug. gested that the Clerk should obtain a copy of Scarboro's bylaw. Dep.
