Inspector of public schools for this area during the passed 17 years, Mr. A. (Archie) Archibald of Centre St. 'south, Whitby, was guest of honor at a testimonial dinner on Wednesday evening June 17. Approximately 250 teachers and guests gathered to pay him honor on the occasion of his re- tirement. This is Mr. Avchibald's last year in his present position as a pub- lic school inspector for South Ontario County. The banquet hall of the Whitby Arena was crowded to capacity with teachers now active in the inspectorate and a number of former area teachers. C. F. Cannon, B.A, B. Paed., L.I.D chief director of Education for the Province of Ontario, was the guest speaker. He was introduced by T. H. Houghton, public school inspector associated with Mr. Archibald in the South Ontario Inspectorate. Mrs. Don- alda Nicholls expressed the thanks to the speaker. Mr. Archibald was presented with a movie camera, projector and sereen as a momento of 'the occassion and his 40 years of activity in the teaching profession. Mrs. Archibald was pre- sented with a bouquet of roses. Mrs. M. Routley and Miss F. At Testimonial Dinner Bachelor of scientific agriculture in 1922, That same year he became a high school teacher and in 1927 moved to Whitby. For 16 years, until 1942, he was principal of the Whitby High School. Appointed a public school inspector in 1942, he served in Haldermand County 'for one year and returned to Whitby to assume the duties of pub- lic school inspector on the retirement of the late Mr. Hutchinson in 1943. He is a charter member of the Whitby Rotary Club and was presi- dent for the 1946-47 term. He was also secretary of the Rotary Club for a number of years. He is an active member of the Whitby United Church. He is a past president of the Whitby Red Cross Society and a Past-Master of Composite Lodge, No. 30, A.F. of A.M. He was elevated to the office of Grand Senior Deacon in 1949. He married the former Jean Stark of Chatham, in 1923. They have six children and 18 grandchildren. Burglary at Blackstock On Sunday night the Central Cart- wright School was broken into and a considerable sum of money taken from "the principal's office. The thief entered the building through the large window on the north side of the building. An awl from the school was used to pry open the steel cabinet in the principal's office where there was a cash box contain- ing receipts from some of the school concerts, The cash box was emptied, but nothing else was disturbed. The teachers did not know that anyone was aware of the cash being kept in the school. The police are investigating. The field day events began with the boys" softhall games. The first game was between Port Perry Junior Farm- crs and Brooklin Junior Farmers with Brooklin winning. In the second game the Uxbridge Junior Farmers defeat- ed the Beaverton Junior Farmers. The final game was played in the evening Uxbridge and Brooklin teams.
