"GREER & KELLY PORT PERRY, ONTARIO The Ferverish Festive Season From now until December 26th, we predict that a glorious madness will overtake almost our entire population, It has already started as the preliniin- ary preparations, the shopping, the store decorations and the coloured lights on the streets bespeak the com- ing" of the year's major even, Christ- mas, ) There is something about the Christ- mas season that thrills us all, making youngsters of parents as they scheme to surprise their children with differ- ent gifts, little decorative touches around the house and so on. It truly is a fascinating, joyful time, building up to a tremendous climax on Christ- mas morning. Our hearts go out to those whose children are grown up and gone from the homestead, but many of the will be coming home with grandchildren to renew their youth in surroundings that will always remind them of their hap- py childhood. Especially, we feel for those who due to sickness or the pass- ing of loved ones will find their happi- ness smothered with pain and sorrow. They will spend their Christmas sea- son recalling memories of better days, but it can never be the same again, only a mockery in many ways. Then there are those who haven't found prosperity. The progress that has touched almost every part of this great country seems to have passed them by for some unaccountable rea- son that is hard to define. Various agencies will be trying to raise enough money to provide them with a good meal, a few bits of tinsel and the odd toy for the youngsters while the rest of us make gluttons of ourselves and completely spoil our offsprings with things they don't need. Tt isn't right but it has always been the same. The poor, as they say, are always with us. We only hope that this year more of of us will make an effort to see that they have a bigger and betfer Christ- mas than every before. Quite soon we should be reading and hearing from those perennials whose slogan is "Let's put Christ back in Christmas and forget so much com- mercialism of a great religious event". We fear it is too late to go back com- pletely because the majority of people seem to like the Christmas season the way it is now. Maybe was have just been sold this new way of celebrating the birth of Christ, by merchandise promoters but it does appear that for many the religious significance of Christmas has been overshadowed, ex- cept for attending church of the an- nual Christmas service. Unfortunely, in many homes that too will be over- looked. However, while we find many things wrong about this season, the vast ma- jority of our people will have an hil- arious time, enjoying every minute of it, even to exchanging the dreadful ties, the too flashy socks and the other gifts that were bought in haste at the last minute. One of the great things about Christ- mas is that it makes many of us think of others instead of ourselves and our problems. We only with that every- one could enjoy it to the full. Heavy Christmas Mail The local Post Office reports that mail is very heavy again this year. In order to speed up delivery the post office have arranged a special box for letters and cards to folk in the Port Perry Delivery area and another for outside mail. This has saved a great deal of time on the sorting table resulting in faster handling of the nail. If you still have cards and letters to post you might keep this in mind and have your piles so ar- ranged that one handful goes into the 'local mail' box and one handful into the 'out of town' box. In conversation with Mr. Hull he stated that there seemed to be an in- crease in the number of young people who are sending out cards this year. It is very gratifying to see folk gett- ing their cards and parcels away ear- lier in the season, as the volume of mail increases from year to year it seems to be the only way in which assurance of pre-Christmas delivéry can be given.
