But we have been fortunate. Things have continued to roll along at a pretty fast clip. N Now some of the most respected forecasters see the possibility of a' small boom in the offing. They be-| lieve the economy will get a real shot in the arm from the decision of the U.S. Federal Power Commission to allow the--importation of "Canadian natural gas. Pipelines will be con- structed, the steel industry will be put to work. Already the stock market is reflect- ing a new feeling of confidence in the Canadian economy. Americans are said to be enthusiastic once again about the steady growth potential of this country. And there is similar enthusiasm building up among Kuro. pean investors. What happened to the depression ? Why did it not materialize? My own view is that we escaped it, go far, because the vast majority of were predicting a serious recession or \ busy again, and more men will be| Canadians are sensible and' industri- ous, When there are storm warn- ings, they note them and act accord- ingly. Demands for heavy govern- ment spending have eased off---except the strident demands of the profes- sional demanders, and a deluge would- #'t stop them! For a time, we were behaving much the same way -as the citizens of 1928.' 29. Governments were beginning to take the attitude that money grew on trees. Some men in responsiblé pe- sitions of. leadership were preaching ' j that prosperity was merely a question | around so that consunrers could keep i buying. Prices zoomed up and up and up. Some of the proposals of these j1sedere, if generally accepted, would ihave assured a depression equal to that of the dirty thirties. Better sense has prevailed. There is a steady growth going on now, and it should soon accelerate. A leading Canadian tire manufacturer reports tires have ex- ploded when alcohol inside the tire carcass was ignited by static electri- ; city built up by the tire's spinning on ice and snow. The association and the Canadian Highway Safety Council have issued urgent warnings to service station and garage operators to avoid alco- hol-based anti-freeze in air compres- I sors and hose lines. Air compressors, they advise, should be checked and {condensation drained according to the i manufacturer's recommendations. If the compressor's air filter is cleaned with gasoline it should be thoroughly dried before being reinstalled. The two groups further urge operators to use only a vegetable-base soap and water solution as a lubricant when mounting tires on drop-centre rims. Some types of commercial rubber lu- bricants, they warn, if used to lubri- cate tires's bead, also result in ex- plosions.
