During the Devotional Deriod the Opening hymn, Scripture selection and Story were paricularly appropriate for suggesting "Hope" for the beginn- ing of the New Year, as it was the "Ninety and Nine", The story depict- ing the black sheep of the family told how a sister (Elizabeth Capane) mour- ning her Brother's fate, was inspired to write a poem which later, under unusual 'circumstances, became the well beloved hymn. * Lotlerg of appreciation were read from the Scott Mission and individuals for the Christmas remembrance, [Reta Rodman reported that 'at least $513.00 had been realized by the Hosp- ital Doll Draw. "A Supper, weather permitting, will" be held Jan, 27 in' the Tea-room, If this is not possihle, each family 1s re- "| quested to donate a $1. as a substitute. Marie Healey presented a "Medical" contest which resulted in much guess- ing as we found our knowledge was very much limited. 'Reta Reader and Leona Barry were requested to choose a Memorial Gift which was donated at Centennial time by the Cliffs' and Willis', Bonnie Gerrow read 2 contrasting readings. "Five Thoughts for the New Year" resulted in grave faces but "Pleasures of Living in the Country" brought forth much mirth. : It was decided with some misgivings to confine- our lunches to one item with beverage. Surprisingly it proved quite satisfactory when the depleted fare appeared. If anything, it seemed to improve our sense of humor. The evening closed 'on an air of secrecy as we drew names for a "My- stery Sister", for 1961. It was your correspondent's pleasure this week to receive appreciation letters from Mr. Will Shaddick of Pawpaw, Ill; and Mrs, Geo. Sweetman of Toronto, Both recalled: pleasures of the Centennial and desired hope for the future, Tho' Mr. Shaddick was hospitalized upon reaching Port Perry he is now in excellent health again. His memory is extremely keen in his reminiscing of Island days 70 years ago as a boy of 8 and 9. years. Mrs... Sweetman, who gave so many years of her life to. the Island will always hold our interest and respect. We are therefore pleased to report her health as favourable again. Congratulations to" Mrs, Burnham and Mr, C. Hardy who have finally decided to share companioinship in matrimony. At present they are vaéat- ioning in Florida. We wish for them ° many more years of .comfort and happiness; "Inthe roll call "wo were like the| god, Janus, required to look ahead in planning an answer but backwards in an accomplishment of 1960.
