N The league consists of seven teams |. this vear, with Port Perry, Brooklin, Markham, Whitby, Mount Zion and Pickering back from last year and the- Port Perry Juniors have moved up from the Inter County league to be the seventh team in the league. Bill Harper is coaching the Port Ferry Merchants this year, and Bill's knowledge and experience in softball will certainly help this year's team. Rod Foster is team manager, and Ken Jackson, President, Jim Taylor -Sec'y and Mike Oke treasurer, round out the executive. The big news this year is that Port Perry will enter into Intermediate 'C' 0.A.S.A. classification which means that the team will be comprised of all Port Perry or surrounding district players. This means that Bill Cornish, Joe Tamblyn, Wayne Venning, Jack Owen,;~Don-Hurst; Gary-Edgar, Doug Foster, Don Cochrane, Bill Gibson, IY Warriner, Rod Foster and Bill Harper will all be available for the team. However Jack Parker, who has played for Port Perry since 1958; and pitcher Murray Woods must be drop- ped off this year's team since they live in Bowmanville and Lindsay res- pectively. Both these boys will bel missed as they were very popular players in Port Perry. Their places will have to be filled before July 16th which is the deadline for signing -players-for O.A.S.A. com= petition, and a pitcher in particular must be found to go along with Joe Tamblyn. ¢ In the past 2 years the Port "Mer- chants" have played Senior "B"" and Intermediate "A" ball, which has thrown them in against Oshawa and Peterborough teams in the 0.A.S.A. 'play-downs. By entering Intermediate | ["C", Port Perry will be playing off against towns of 3500 population or less. This probably means that their | first opponents will be Brooklin Ste- venson Motors who have perennially been Inter "C" contenders. With 2 or 3 of the Port Perry Jrs. moving up to the "Merchants" next vear including pitcher Archie Menzies, 'Port Perry'should have a strong Inter "C" team of all local boys, for many years to come. Don't forget to come up to the fair grounds at Port Perry and give your support to the team. You will see some very entertaining softball as well as supporting the "home town" team. GRAHAM Two senior citizens are celebrating their 96th birthdays at Fairview Lodge on June 23 and 25th. Mrs. Gibson, the former Emma Hooker, was born at Raglan, June 23, 1865, one of a family of four. - She grew up and lived ip the Raglan area and still has some relatives residing' in the district, a neice Mrs. A. Bunker of Kinsale, nephews, Norman Gib- son, Brooklin, "Clarence Pengally of Brooklin, and Elvin Hooker, Kinsale. " Unfortunately Mrs. Gibson is quite hard of hearing and conversation with her was rather limited. Well-known by many Port Perry folk is Mrs. Alice Graham, who lived for many years on Bigelow St., then more recently in the Ballard apart- ments, now at Whitby. Mrs, Graham, the Alice former White, was born near Marsh Hill, in' Reach Twp. and attended the Marsh Hill school.. Her birthday is June 25. In wonderful health, with good hear- ing and eyesight, Mrs. Graham re- recalled many incidents of by-gone MRS. E. GIBSON days, the Boer war, the 1st Great War and the great fires of 1883 and 84 at Port Perry. She told us that her father made the first organ to be used in the Marsh Hill church. This church has long since disappeared. Mrs. Graham was the youngest of a family of 10, three brothers and six sisters have all predeceased her. She married Will Graham of Scugog where they farmed until 1914 when they moved to Port Perry. Mr. Graham died 16 years ago. Happy and active Mrs, Graham en- joys her days at Fairview. One of her hobbies is hemstitching and an ex- ample of her work will be shown to- gether with the hobbies of others at Fairview in the C. N. E. this year. Mrs. Graham says that she does not enjoy TV but spends her time listen- ing to radio programs, Jack Dennis of CFRB being her favorite program. When weather permits she enjoys a walk around the spacious grounds at Fairview Lodge. Music Exam Results .. With the score tied, 'Hartin doubled with one out in the ninth, stole third, and when Fishley drilled a ball to centre, caught by Josephson the centre fielder, Hartin was doubled up at the plate trying to score after the cateh, by a whisker. ~ The Tigers counted 3 times in the Ist on 3 bases on balls and a pair of singles as Hartin encountered his only serious trouble. In the 3rd the Braves took advant- age of walks to Davidson, Wanamaker and Healey to load the bases, a two run single by Cawker, and a base- clearing double by Hallet to jump in front 4-3. The Tigers scored the ty- ing run in the 9th on a walk and back to back singles Dy Brooks ind "(that man again) Josephson. . Neither team committed an error afield, demonstrating why both teams are well up in league standing.
