What is the purpose of a retail sales vendor's permit? The permit shows that the vendor is properly registered with the Compt- roller of Revenue as required by The Retail Sales Tax Act. The permit must-be posted in a conspicuous place in the business establishment of the vendor. 2. Who must obtain a retail sales tax vendor's permit? Every person must have a vendor" permit who sells goods to consumers, or purchases goods for resale, or who sells prepared meals, or telephonic services. Every salesman, or manu- facturer's agent who solicits orders for a non-resident vendor not register- ed in Ontario must have a vendor's permit. 3. How is a permit application form obtained? If a vendor has not already received a copy of the application form, please write to the Comptroller of Revenue, Retail Sales Tax Branch, Parliament Buildings, Toronto 2, Ontario, or re- quest a copy from the District: Office of the Retail Sales Tax Branch near- est you, | 4. C.G.E. Hits Back | At Japanese Competition Canadian General Electric announ- ced recently it had solved the prob- lem of Japanese price competition in the Christmas decorative light market. Meeting with dealers and distributors, CGE executives described how com- pletely new production, packaging, distribution and marketing techniques had resulted in prices equal to, or even lower than Japanese import prices. : - The Japanese have had the lion's share of the Canadian Christmas light market for several years, a com- pany spokesman explained. Christ- had been manufactured by CGE and other firms for distribution organiza- tions that sold them under their own trade names. But the production of Canadian-made Christmas lights vir- tually disappeared when the private brand organizations began purchas- ing Jarge quantities of Japanese Christmas lights. As a result, many Canadians lost their jobs. "We had to develop a completely new ap- proach, or go out of business entirely in these lines," he said. - A .
