The Ontario Department of Lands and Forests has set the same open geason as last year for beaver--from November 1, 1961 to March 31, 1962 --in that part of the province lying south of the French and Mattawa Ri- vers. All trapping of beaver is on a quota basis authorized by the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests, and all skins must be sealed by a De- partment officer before being sold by the trapper. Trappers are advised to take their beaver in the early winter when pelts the prime and superior. The supply of beaver is no problem to most trap- pers for the animals have increased enormously in various parts of the province, so much so that in some districts they have become a/huisance. Canada's national animal is know | chiefly for his ability to cut dow, trees and build dams. He is the lgr- gest of our rodents or knawing gni- mals, resembling a large muskrat Avith a broad flat tail. The front or" in- cisor teeth are very efficient fhisels with which to gnaw down trees on the river bank. The flat tail is used in swimming and in plasteting mud in place on his dam. It ig also .used # Milt Butson is. seen removing the ing on an ice covered beaver set. AHMIK THE KING to warn his fellow workers of dene as a vigorous slap on the water can be heard some little distance, and an ° alert is sounded. The beaver is quite at home on the water and can usually handle him- self in a skirmish but if "he strays too far overland he becomes number one dish 'for a wolf or bear. Even though he gets in the hair of town- ship engineers for his mania for de- veloping ponds, he must be given a big "E" for his protection against forest fires, his waterfowl breeding and nesting areas and even the speckled trout will move in and share a pond. Nocturnal As most of the Beavers activities are carried on at night, he is not of- - ten seen at work. The industrious beaver digs up armfuls of mud from the bottom of the pond and then bal- ancing himself on tail and hind legs' staggers up the slippery side of the house where he pats and smooths the mud like plaster. This outer shell eventually freezes and becomes an impregnable barrier foiling predators and wintry blasts. / Often a tree marked for felling be- 'comes entangled in another and the beaver has miscalculated in his trig-. Infact to go through a swamp after 8 beaver colony has been set up you may find 6509 of the trees did not behave as the beaver had hoped. For' all that/ he is a most industrious ¢uss. gergnawmetry.
